Yaris hybrid

as a newbie. There are 3 drive modes in my 2024 Yaris hybrid. model. For best economy which one should I choose? Eco , the middle unnamed one or Power ?

should I change it according to speed and length of journey?  Or  choose one and let the engine choose?

I assumed city driving should be ECO but not sure

cheers

I drive in ready mode and I find it a satisfactory mode to use. However ECO mode is a little better for MPG, but the response to the accelerator is a bit slower. In Power mode it is a little more response to the throttle but MPG is down a little. So the middle one is Ready mode and is more than enough response for a normal driver. Driving on mountainous terrain and mostly long runs on A and B roads I'm averaging 73 -76 MPG on every fill. These are not car computer figures, but but full to full calculations.

All the modes actually do is change how the accelerator pedal responds to input - Normal is quite a linear response, Eco ramps up much slower and Power ramps up faster, but at full throttle they all arrive at the same point.

Just pick one that feels good to you and get used to how it reacts.

I personally use Eco 99% of the time as the bigger inputs I need to make give more low-speed finesse - Good for low-speed manoeuvres and crawling in traffic.

I do sometimes switch to Normal if the car is fully loaded as it makes the car feel the same as it does in Eco

I tried Power but it's harder to finesse the accelerator pedal to keep the engine off and run only on the electrics in that mode!

That's actually called 'NORMAL' mode.

The largest effect on economy for any given car is the driver and their ability (or lack of) to use only what power is needed and anticipate so as to avoid mechanical braking as much as possible.

Modes are just a crude attempt to nudge people in the right direction - learning how to drive economically will be better for economy.

Normal mode all the time and no need to switch in between.
As mentioned above with the time you will learn how the car drives, how much power to use to move forward without any excess, and you will become more efficient driver. Anticipating the road ahead , smooth continues drives and avoid unnecessary hard accelerations and hard braking are the factors that dictate fuel efficiency.

I leave mine in eco.

In my old mk3 I would switch to normal at busy roundabouts otherwise it would be too slow to get going at the required speed. In the mk4 I don't have to, eco is sufficient enough.

As already explained choosing one mode over another makes no difference to the performance of the car, it just means that in Eco mode you have to press the accelerator pedal further, and in Power mode, less for the same result compared with Normal.

Eco also changes how "aggressive" the auto A/C works (I don't like it full blasting in my face when it's hot outside and I just got in - easiest way to catch cold), so there are some fine differences apart from the accelerator characteristics. Personally I also drive in Eco for the same reason that @Cyker mentioned - it's easier to pick the right pedal position for low power situations. And it's still possible to get full power when flooring it so it's really a personal preference.

For the 2024 Cross Excel at least, the AC itself also has an Eco/Fast button - not sure if still interacts with the driving mode. Admittedly I haven't RTFM.

I've stuck to Eco in my Yaris Cross for both driving mode and A/C and haven't particularly noticed there to be a lack of power pulling away but I am curious to try Normal and see what effect it will have with my current driving habits.

Currently driven just under 2000 miles and my calculated consumption is over 60mpg per fill (car reports lifetime 64.8mpg) so I'm nowhere the 70's some people are doing well to get (1hr journeys mostly A/B roads at 50-60mph and the rest through 20/30mph) but it's better than my old diesel.

Yes, that's the "override" button, but when you don't force any of them and just stick to auto and switch the power mode to eco, it uses the eco mode on the a/c as well. There might be more features that we didn't catch because they are not so obvious from the driver perspective
