Hi! 

I've had my lovely project car for almost 2 months now. I changed all the fluids and other service items right after getting it. I've now noticed that my Jari consumes a little bit of oil: 1/8 liters / ~1000 miles. Now I've heard these don't consume that much oil. Anyone else experiencing this and should I check some things, which may decrease this consumption. Jari has done a little under 100k miles.

I bought this to learn about working on cars, although i'm not afraid to rebuild the engine, I would like to get my confidence up when it comes to working on cars before cracking it open 😺 So any ideas on where to start would be appreciated.

- only a little bit of white smoke on cold startup, otherwise does not produce smoke

If you mean one eighth of a litre over one thousand miles, I would say not excessive consumption.

My Tsport doesn't seem to use any between changes, but I don't do a lot of mileage either, on a 55k mile engine.

I'd say where to start would be to leave the engine alone if it's running ok, highly unlikely you need a rebuild with new valves,piston rings etc.

If you are worried that you have engine wear, do a compression test on all cylinders.

125ml over 1000 miles is not too bad. Unless the engine smokes and runs badly, I would leave it alone. As Paul said, do a compression test and check that it is even across the cylinders. 

Otherwise, continue to drive it for a few more months so you get to know it. Oil consumption will vary with seasons and driving patterns. Overall, these engines are pretty durable.

My Mk2 1.33 was using something like 1000+ml per ~800miles so you've got a ways to go before I'd consider it a problem :laugh:

Is that the engine you have mentioned before as being a bad un?

Very rare for Toyota to make a poor engine I know, but there is always a bad one or two with any of the manufacturers, some with plenty of bad ones.

This sort of information is very useful to people who buy the older motors, like me.

Yeah, it was a brand new engine Toyota made from the ground up, which is a rare thing for Toyota - The first generation 1NR-FE 1.33 litres.

They made it to have low CO2 to get the £30 road tax, but the 'low friction' piston rings were too weak and didn't clear the oil properly so loads of it got burnt up in cylinders.

There was a revised engine that fixed it and Toyota did their usual 10 years free replacement, but it seems like hardly anyone did it as so many Yaris Mk2s with that engine seem to have that problem.

It's why I tend to tell people to be wary of the the 2009+ Mk2 Yaris 1.33 (And also 1.33L IQ and Auris from that time period, as they also had the same engine!), and look to the Mk3 if they want the 1.33L engine with £30 road tax. (But at that point you may as well stretch a bit more to get one with the 1.5L engine which is somehow still £30 to tax but has more oomph! :naughty: )

The <2008 Mk2 used the older 1.3L engine, which was much more reliable but had less HP and was a lot more to tax (~£130 at the time)

Perhaps the engine has some wear on cylinder walls and that’s way consume some oil. Usually you can run two tests while driving to try to find the exact reason as it might be from other things. 
Take the car at night on the motorway and do some hard acceleration front of another car so the car behind headlights can point directly into your car and watch the mirror, a long smoke cloud behind means it’s is cylinder walls and piston rings. Second test is lift off accelerator while downhill and again a car or lorry behind needs to help you with the lights , if the car start to smoke on lift off is from valve stem seals. 
PCV valve check and replace, head gasket leak coolant checks, and also pull out the spark plugs , they can tell a lot. Check for leaks too. 
And as others said don’t bother to repair of the engine is running smoothly and nicely. My car burns up to 3ltr per 10k miles and smokes like locomotive 🚂 when pushed hard, the exhaust end is smoky black with diamonds inside but I don’t care, still running really good and it’s a triple fuel, petrol electric and oil 😅
