Hi all,

I have a question about the A/C. Should I hear the compressor engage when I press the A/C button? This morning, I pressed the front window defogger button, which started the A/C, but I didn't hear the compressor. I wonder if it's very quiet or not working.

The compressor is electric due to being a Toyota hybrid.

You won't hear it " click " in to engage.

It looks like there is a problem and the A/C is quiet for a reason. I went and scanned the car for faults and coincidentally I have one for the air conditioning.

You have a problem with your ac compressor. And yes you should hear it when it’s working. You need further investigation. If your car under warranty or relax warranty you may want to go that way otherwise may turn to be expensive. Have you ever re gas or been driving through deep waters ? Check also for resident attack and damaged cable, it’s a big one orange from ac directly into inverter.

On a 2 year old car?? (re-gas)

I've never heard the compressor running on any Yaris I have owned (they all had climate control and it was on all the time I owned them). It is almost silent when running on a Yaris.

The sound loudness depending on air temperature outside, have settings and also if the option for reduced noise levels been selected, these can be checks with Carista.
For the op problem there are videos on YouTube and problem can be serious, inverter, cables, ecu, compressor itself .

Thanks, guys, for your replies. I have my car booked in for tomorrow. Hopefully, they will find what's wrong with it.

Hi again. The A/C is fixed. I was told that there was chafing in the big orange cable, as TonyHSD mentioned in a post above. It was rubbing against something. They repaired and secured it, and it was done under warranty. The A/C is working as it should, and there are no more faults.
