Auris Hybrid Battery Cooling Fan Filter - DIY

Recommended Posts

Been a discussion few times previously these cars doesn’t have original filter fitted in factory.
Toyota offers in their catalog a number but it comes totally different part and it doesn’t fit this model.
Today I decided to do a diy solution using a cabin filter element, cut to measure, fitted on the back side of the grill, secured with double sided tape, air flow direction followed, fit as good as oem.
The question is, will this restrict the air flow by much so can reduce the fan efficiency?
The newer models seems to have a similar filter while the previous model have only a smaller net like filter.
I had an idea for a net using ikea stopp rug underlay shown on pictures ,

https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/stopp-anti-slip-underlay-90549052/

but I really want to stop any dust or fluff going into the cooling fan. Been there to clean already 3 times.
Any ideas, opinions and questions more than welcome. 👌

Hi Tony, regarding the airflow, any kind of filter or material placed in front of the intake will likely cause some restriction. The main concern is whether the material you are  using is too dense or thick, which could limit airflow and reduce the fan's efficiency. If the filter is breathable and not overly thick, it shouldn’t significantly affect how well the fan works.

The idea of using the IKEA Stopp rug underlay is clever if it’s fine enough to allow good airflow but still provides filtration, it could work as a decent alternative. Just make sure it doesn’t clog up too quickly, and pay attention to any drop in air volume or performance. If everything feels the same as before, You've probably cracked it. If the fan feels weaker, it might be worth tweaking the setup a bit.

If it works long term pattern it and make a fortune.😂👍

Could you cut down a prius gen4 one. Its a little denser than the cabin filter

Thanks Bob.
I am going out now to drive and test how it works. Will check with the app too.  Post some pictures later or tomorrow. 👍

Probably could do.
But this cabin filter is what I had in stock right now. Let see how it works.
Thanks

Just keep an eye on it more regularly - The one downside with better filtration is it clogs up faster!

Thanks all for the replies .
I did some testing and noticed that the fan will start only if Battery reaches 36C° .
When I started the car it was showing 14C° and then after around 45 min drive went up to only 22C°.
I used the app and manually switched the fan to speed 6 and it was sucking very strong , even it moved inward the top end which is not fixed by glue.
This is what I need to do with hot gun glue eventually. I think this filter if ok for a hvac should be ok for the Battery fan as these are very similar just the hybrid Battery is a bit smaller size. Will play a bit more in the next few day when I have time and see what I decide to keep it or remove it and stay original., but the gf jacket with fluff made me go that way 😅👌

Paper filter top end secured with hot gun glue and it looks more original than ever, mann or perhaps Denso quality 😅👌

Last night test pass but top end was moving when the fan was at highest speed, will test tomorrow daytime and make a video for you.
For the air flow restriction I am not concerned anymore since I try to breathe throttle and it’s as easy as it can be plus more I look at the material more similarities to face mask I find.
Tony does these experiments to his car so you don’t have to , but if we call it a success, everyone can do it for themselves. 👍

I think cabin air filter with fiberglass materials is the best choice. It is durable and will not clogged even if it is wet, unlike paper base filter.

I believe my filter job is a success.

i did tested it with hair dryer for air flow and yes it does restrict air flow as it will any sort of filter however air can still flow freely and also the air temperature changes as per the dryer settings change, the Battery fan is working as usual and Battery temperature is managed as usual.
Anyone interested can do one of these for themselves.
Important bit is to open the Battery first, clean thoroughly the battery cooling fan, ducts and then install a filter.  👍
