Hi, I have a 69 plate Rav that's is eligible for the Andriod Auto upgrade (checked registration on Toyota website) but when I put it into local dealership to get it done (for £50 since they're servicing the car) but they're saying I need to pay for the new maps installed first at £120 and something about a licence... anyone got any ideas? Not been too impressed with dealership and not convinced they know what they're doing as we've been asking about AA for months and they never call us back!

That doesn't make sense. Doesn't have anything to do with the car sat Nav maps. And no idea what they mean by license unless Google are charging the automotive industry per car that AA is installed on?

Hi Barry, the dealership might be confusing the Android Auto upgrade with a separate map update or subscription. Normally, the Android Auto upgrade itself shouldn’t require you to pay for maps or a license, especially since it’s a free upgrade for your model.

The £120 charge they mentioned could be for updating the maps on your car’s navigation system, which is a separate service. If you’re keeping the car’s built in navigation up to date, that’s usually an extra cost, but it’s not related to Android Auto. It’s also possible they’re talking about a software license for the navigation or a specific update for the maps, which should not be necessary for Android Auto.

Since you’ve been asking about Android Auto for months without a response, it seems like they might not be fully clear on what’s needed. You might want to double check with them that the £120 is for maps and not Android Auto. You could also contact Toyota customer service directly to confirm what is needed for the Android Auto upgrade and if maps or licenses are actually required. If you’re still not happy with their answer, I would try another Toyota dealer.👍

In the original large topic on the retrofit Android Auto, Devon Aygo, who works for a Toyota dealer, stated on March 10 2021:

"Map version has to be 2018 v1 or newer, if older the update USB will not be recognised by the head unit."
