PHEV conundrum with fuel type grading (E5 or E10)

Some country only offer E10 or E15 and even E85.
But here in uk where e5 97 is still available at slightly higher price than e10 95 makes absolute sense to use the better fuel especially on cars like yours , recents and expensive.
My car is old, rusty, and worn bucket with high miles and still e10 is only an option where nothings else is available. I often pay up to 25p a litre more but I have no knocking noises on cold, no engine metallic noises on acceleration and smooth transition from ev to petrol. It’s just a nicer car to drive.

For the majority of owners who recycle their cars every 3 years with low mileage, E10 will make little difference other than a slight loss of economy. For those of us like me, who intend keeping their RAV PHEV until it has probably 150,000 miles on the clock I am not prepared to risk engine problems when out of warranty for sake of saving 10p/litre on fuel. Of course Toyota approve use of E10, they had to, but that doesn’t mean E5 isn’t better. I will take my race engineers advice and prior personal experience of achieving trouble free high mileages (180k, 150k, and 120k x 2) in diesels using E5 and Vpower fuels and stick with it.

I was only being light hearted Philip with the old Honda but ethanol eats rubber seals, bet you don't see them adding ethanol to F1 race car engines if it's that good.

F1 race cars have been running on E10 since 2022 - just as well it was only a virtual bet ... 😉

I bet that they don't and it's not going to be E10 road fuel anyway - but it does already contain 10% ethanol, and that percentage is set to increase. And just like F1, we need quality fuel rather than ethanol free fuel ...

This is in the manual for PHEV. Page 97

■Notice about fuel
●For Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles, fuel may remain in the tank for a long time and undergo changes in quality depending on the how the vehicle is used. Refuel at least 20 L (5.3 gal., 4.4 Imp.gal.) of fuel every 12 months (refuel a total of at least 20 L [5.3 gal., 4.4 Imp.gal.] over a 12-month period), as this may affect components of the fuel system or the gasoline engine.

●If the vehicle has not been refueled for a certain amount of time and it is possible that the quality of the fuel
remaining in the tank has changed, “No New Fuel has been Added Recently Please refuel” is displayed on the multi-information
display when the power switch is turned to ON. If the message is displayed, refuel the vehicle immediately.
