Aygo 2nd-gen Suspension Harshness

Hi,

I am wondering if anyone has advice as to regards to if it is possible to make the suspension of my Aygo go back towards what it felt like when new. To be honest it is still quite good and supple but I just note a slight thud and knock now when going over some rougher surfaces. It is not terrible but I am curious as to, first, what part is causing this on the vehicle, and second if changing said part would cure the issues.

I understand dampers (shock absorbers) and springs wear out so it could be them. But it could also I guess be the bushes. Nothing has been picked up when I take my car in for yearly services but I know the car well after driving it for long so can pick-up these changes.

Aygo 2nd-gen MMT (Motorised Manual Transmission). 40,000 + miles.

I look forward to any advice.

Thanks.

It's hard to say without proper diagnostic.  I mean, any of the following can cause a knock:

  • Worn bushing on Anti-roll bar
  • Worn Anti-roll bar Drop-link
  • Worn Upper struct mount
  • Worn Control Arm bushing
  • Worn ball joint
  • Bad wheel bearing
  • Oil leaked struct

For other cars, it is mostly Worn Anti-roll bar drop-link, especially those with double ball designs.  However, Aygo uses pin design which are less likely to fail.

Rather than firing parts cannon, I think you are much better to go to a garage and see what they says.

I work on car since 2017.  I can fix most of the stuff down to changing the Clutch.  It has provided me with many extra income (to buy toys - car tools).  For all those extra jobs that I took, chasing down knocking sounds is my least favour.

Some of them were easy, say you saw a gap on the upper struct.  jack the car up and the gap is gone. Clear indication of worn upper struct mount.  But some where the owner changed Anti-roll bar drop link, control arm and the sound still there.  Try to shake the wheel 12 & 6 O'clock and the wheel feel solid.  Where else can you look?  (even garages had trouble isolating the knocking component).
