Check Hybrid System Warning Light !!

The past couple of weeks the car when moving off from standstill or in traffic kind of spluttered power wise then eventually back to normal when giving plenty of gas

Today the Check Hybrid System warning light came on

I parked up immediately as was close to home. Called a local garage who said it could be the fans near the batteries, they will check it tomorrow

Is the car safe to drive to the garage or is there risk it could completely stop whilst driving?

Should I take it to Toyota or let the local garage have a look first?

As for hybrids, you can still drive them (if it wants to drive) when they give you error, but of course, only to get it to service center.

Don’t drive the car and get a diagnostic first to see what is wrong.
If is any of the two water pumps you can either damage your engine or your inverter, or if it’s the Battery fan you can damage the hybrid Battery. Check first before you drive. Or only drive a mile to the garage.

@Bruce Lea Do you have a 2013-2015 (pre-facelift) Auris? Check the HV Battery cooling intake if it is dirty under the rear left passanger seat. Usually, it starts with warning about Battery cooling system if it is clogged.  However, your check engine lights is already on. You should get a ELM327 such as Veepeak and install Dr. Prius App or Carista App for diagnostic. Dr. Prius app can check each module of the Battery temperature, charging level, and internal resistance. Carista can read all codes almost as good as Toyota Techstream tool.  If it is sputtering from standstill, I suspect either inverter or HV battery issues. If the HV batery is defective, you can still drive around with low power. If it is inverter issues, you may not be able to drive and can cause sudden stop.

At least for 2010-2014 Prius, there is a known recall about the The Warranty Reimbursement Procedures section has been updated with additional OP Codes for: • Replace the ME ECU • Replace the IPM (Intelligent Power Module)

Although it is from the USA government but most of the parts came from Japan for hybrid in that period.

It's 2014 Auris, the display error above came suddenly today out of the blue.

I didn't see any previous error on the dashboard

Why is the engiine light on if the message days check hybrid system?

How does the invertor get damaged?

Helpful information already shared.
Don’t drive your car and scan your codes.
See and understand the reason for your warning messages and then take appropriate action.
Feel free to drive your car and don’t take our suggestions and if anything goes wrong it’s on you.
If you don’t want to go garage buy this and do diagnostic yourself.

The IPM in the Inverter sometimes failed from overheating. It was a recall in the USA for Prius 3 and it has identical powertrain as Auris and LC200h. It is a very rare case and this is free voluntary recalls for 2009-2014 production cars. Check with the dealership if you get the newest ECU program. I remember that there are several ECU update including EGR and safety mode to avoid sudden stop when IPM failed.

If I were you, I will use my insurance to tow the car to the dealership and do a complete check including for any ECU updates.

Indy used some device to connect yo car to read codes, then removed the bsvk seat and showed me the mesh like filter near the fan it was totally covered in dirt blocked fully.

Garage cleaned that up, put it back and seats and took the readings again and reset everything.

Turned car off then back on and all the errors on the dash disappeared.

Told me to drive the car around and if lights come back to bring thr car back, touch wood everything ok
