Good afternoon,

i recently purchased a Yaris Cross 2024 model Hybrid vehicle and have noticed that when it shifts from ev to engine the car roars uncomfortably loud even on a straight line and low acceleration press nothing drastic. Is this normal for this car? I dont remember this noise on the test drive model.

phoned the dealer and asked them and of course they said it is normal but i find that hard to believe.

it is so frustrating to a point of getting rid of the car.

thank you in advance

Hi,

can you record the noise and share with us.
It could be indeed normal or could be not but without hearing it we can’t say for sure.

It's normal, the engine noise, lack of soundproofing etc has been raised a few times on the forum

It certainly isn't normal.....my 2024....doesn't "roar, uncomfortably loud" , when ice starts...not even a meow.

Depending on what the ICE is coming on to do, for accelaration it isn't to bad but when Battery charging I have noticed it is quite loud. As has been said there are a few mentions on here (and on youtube reviews) about how harsh it sounds.

Ours is quite lumpy when cold for the first few miles, especially as the first mile out of our house is quite a steep hill - seems to settle down and less rorty after a mile or so.

Hi Stavros

When switching from EV to ICE power depending on the power demand from you the car will go almost full power and that will be noisy, in time you will get used to it and use more linear acceleration and the sound will go down. Most likely I believe you are coming from a normal ICE car, and it takes time getting used to Toyota Hybrids.

I was the same when I got the car, now is all good and comfortable, Hybrid cars will "teach" you how to drive them in time if it makes sense.

Thing I learned with Toyota Hybrids:

-Engine will come on when it needs, not when you think or it makes sense for the engine to be on, sometimes working as an generator or as ICE

-the driving style will change in time

-they are more noisy then other cars but you will get used to it

-the Safety systems are very prudent and come on very early

All these rough engines running, strange noises, higher rpm, car trying to move forward when in P and engine starts, car is driven by the electric motor and engine keeps constant rpm, then when going downhill and engine is running very high rpm, or why engine is constantly running where previously was not are typical Toyota hybrid behaviour. However is some cases there are non typical sounds and noises and those needs to be confirmed so owners can look and get them fixed while still under warranty.

As you have previously said tony, if there is no warning code then it should all be normal. Op just bought the car so isn't used to it, I have the same engine in my car.

The 3 Pot M15A and the newer gen eCvt box runs very differently compared to the old hybrid systems, yes they all have the 20-30 second ICE rumble when cold, when the ICE goes into charge mode especially when cold the car idles at 1500-2500 rpm

if you are coming from a 4-cylinder non-hybrid or even an older hybrid car it can be disconcerting, what compounds matters is the lack of sound deadening, not long had the top of my dash off, I can confirm there is just one 5-6mm layer of recycled mat (acoustic felt) on the firewall, and just a thin blanket under the hood

I have found with my YC, the ICE will "select" the lowest "gear" when switching from hybrid Battery. I have had several CVT cars over the last 15 or so years and must admit this one is strange and does take some getting used to. Previous cars had and electrical selector making the car feel it had gears, this YC seems not to and revs quite happily. I do not, however, experience it as noisy.

It's not a cvt as such as it does not use a torque converter nor has a belt and pullies, it's a gear drive with a 3 way planetary gear

there are many threads on the subject, the gearbox in the Mk4 and Mk1 grumpy is known as the Toyota P910

ahaha the Yaris Grumpy

It is very subjective - As a DERV person I find the 3-pot rumble quite soothing and familiar, but compared to the buttery smooth and practically silent 1NR-FE in my Mk2 it sounds a lot less refined!

It's compounded by the lack of sound deadening plus the car is so quiet in EV mode, the 3-pot rumble is very noticeable. Fortunately the terrible roads I drive on produce so much road noise it all gets lost in the general din...

I do wish they'd put on a hydraulically damped engine mount and/or a balancer shaft though...
