Rav4 2006 diesel, emissions failed miserably

Its just failed the mot on emissions, I am not surprised because it has been chucking out white smoke for a while now, it is also using a lot of engine oil, about a litre every 3 or 4 hundred miles, it has done nearly 160,000 miles, so am I looking at end of life? shame because it is still a tidy car. the last 3dr model made

That sounds like RIP to me.

A replacement engine should sort it but is it worth the time, effort and cost - if one is available?
