Switching to Hybrid Surprise

Today I was driving and with 22 miles EV range, and I noticed the mpg going down. I had front and rear wipers, headlights and climate control on, and rear heated window for a short period.

I don't believe I pushed the hybrid button so why did this happen?

I put it back in EV then it stayed in that mode for the rest of the journey with 10 miles EV range left.

Exactly what happened to me today. 40+ miles left on the traction Battery. Switched itself to hybrid mode 3 times on a single 30 minute trip. Switched it back to EV each time. I assume it's something to do with the low temperatures and a lot of power being drawn off the 12V. 

There will be Toyota method in the madness.
