Hi everyone,

I recently bought a brand-new Toyota Yaris Cross (2024 model).

Out of an old habit, I opened the hood just to check if everything was fine and to take a picture for insurance purposes, even though there was no reason to suspect an issue.

I gave the engine oil cap a gentle turn, applying enough pressure to ensure it was securely tightened, but not with excessive force and it rotated two times and made a clicking sound. I immediately stopped and didn't apply any more pressure to make it turn further.

Now I'm wondering:

  1. Was the clicking sound normal, like a lock engaging, or could it indicate over-tightening and potential damage?
  2. I didn’t apply a lot of pressure—just a strong/regular power twist.
  3. Are Toyota oil caps designed with a click-lock mechanism for tightening?

I inspected the cap afterward (I didn’t remove it, just looked from the top), and there were no visible cracks or leaks, but I’m curious if this might have caused any harm or if it’s nothing to worry about. Would appreciate your thoughts or similar experiences!

Thanks!

Clicking tells you its tight. Obviously before it was loose.

Nothing to worry about.

My fuel filler cap on my 1998 petrol Avensis and 2009 diesel Verso also do this. Certainly normal for fuel filler caps.

I'm sure it will be fine. You should now go and remove it if only to prove to yourself that you are the master of it...

The oil cap on my Auris once had me having to use a spanner to crack it open, it really was that tight. Might have been after a service but can't remember now. There is only a rubber seal under the rim and it needs little tightening in practice, just a firm twist until you feel resistance.

Petrol caps as @talldavementioned click on a ratchet type thing when fully tightened.
