Verso won't start/ cut out whilst driving.

Hi folks,

I have a 2012 Verso 2.0D, 110,000 miles, full dealer service history, one lady owner before me and I have owned it since July and since put 10,000 miles on it - as a  Taxi.

2 days ago in torrential rain I was driving along and just as I approached a Dual Carriageway I "put my foot down" and the car juddered and all the dash lights came on. As this Dual carriageway was a steep down hill I wasn't really aware of the full situation (ie whether the car had gone into limp or stalled.) It was only when the hill levelled out I realised the engine wasn't running.

After pulling up and trying to start the engine with no success I am here now....

The tank was 3/4 full. No engine management light showing. Breakdown driver couldn't find any check codes.

Garage can't see me for 2 weeks and I'm desperately desperate.

One thing I did notice is that it did seem to be slightly down on power prior.

Garage had a quick look and found fuel pressure is very low but I can confirm some fuel is getting to the injectors.

I've checked all the fuses and are OK.

Coincidentally or not but 2 bulbs in the o/s headlight blew a couple of hours before.

As I say cranks fine but nothing.

Can anyone point me in the right direction ? Fuel pump, relay etc.

Many thanks,

                     Andy.

Check fuel filter. It may not have been replaced by the previous owner.

I replaced mine at 80k and never missed a beat owning it from 30k to 130k miles now.

I would've expected the fuel filter to have been changed at least recently due to the full service history.

Fuel filter isn't changed as part of the full service - Never was with any of my Yaris D4Ds.

Fuel filter usually triggers CEL and a code, but still worth a check - Might be the water trap needs emptying. Can also try using the priming pump in the engine bay (It's a button that looks like a dark grey smarty) to see if that helps.

Did the breakdown person check if the fuel pump/fuse was still working?

I've personally checked all the fuses myself - all OK. I'll have a look at priming, but I know the breakdown driver did try priming but I couldn't see what he was pressing.

This is a push button on top of the fuel filter housing for priming.

As @Cykersaid fuel filter is not part of the service. I always ask my mechanic to do it regardless when you buy a used car to prevent these starting issue. As you don't know what has been done to the car.

Thanks for that, I'm going to (attempt to) change the filter myself tomorrow. Wish me luck !

When you say it does not start, does it even crank?

Make sure you have some spare diesel to top up the fuel filter when you replace the fuel filter. This will make it easier for priming.

Thanks for that tip bud 👍.

Oh, and it cranks fine. Like I say, it just cut out whilst driving (at 60mph.)

Whether related, but curiously odd, or not. My previous car (Taxi) was a C-Max which had exactly the same symptoms (Diesel - cut off whilst driving) of which the Garage couldn't find a speedy solution so I sold it as a non runner and bought the Verso :-

Now, my "Taximeter" has been playing up recently and shutting itself down for about an hour before "rebooting" itself and coming back on. It's connected to the ECU via a CAN bus and I'm just wondering could it have caused an issue with the car's ECU ?

Seems unlikely I know but as I say,  my C-Max through up exactly the same symptoms only last July !

And the Fuel filter was changed regularly on that C-Max !

Not familiar with your Taximeter connection to ECU. I am not aware that the Verso has Canbus. My 2010 plate doesn't have it and I doubt yours will have it. If you think the Taximeter is interfering with the ECU, could you not disconnect it and see what happens to rule things out?
