Carina - High Rpm (rev).

I have recently bought a Carins E Kudos Auto. When starting it from cold, the initial revs go from 1200 to 2200 within 3 or 4 secs. This is a real problem on an automatic car, as it just seems to jump whenever you release brakes (and quiet dangerous too). However, the come to more normal(ish) 1300 rpm after around 2-3 mins of driving and then settle down to 900 rpm after 5 mins of driving.

Has anyone else experience this problem - or is it normal on Carina Kudos Auto. Any replies/ help will be much appreciated - as I am totally new to the car.

Could be automatic "Choke" ie. Enriched petrol /air ratio. Most cars do this, the computer in the car will try to balance cold starting needing a richer mix with overreving. To do this correctly, all sensors and cooling circuits need to be working correctly. A slightly dodgy temp sensor or Stuck thermostat or fuel sensor can throw it.

Best solution are to take it to a tuning centre/Toyota to make sure all the idle settings and mix are Ok. Check that there are no engine management warning lights (yellow thing on dashboard) which may indicate a dodgy sensor.

Also check operation of all coolant components.

Saying that my Corolla, leaps to to 1800rpm in the first 2 seconds, then stays at 1100rpm-1000rpm until Engine has reached normal temp. Check Toyota manual, I think mine says the car takes 5 seconds or so to settle down in terms of rpm.

if it bothers you , let it idle until the revs die down to a suitable level before driving off, the auto choke works on hot water system , the hotter it gets the quicker the choke comes off.

reset the ECU by removing the EFI fuse for 30 secs or disconnect the Battery for a couple of minutes. The ECU should take default values and re learn your driving style.

Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions. Have checked the manual and it does says that it should settle down after 5 secs, which is taking around 2 minutes.

As suggested, it might be down to some faulty sensor because the other day I took out air temp. sensor from Air filter housing and held it in in had for about 2/3 minutes. The RPMs did not jump to 2000 on starting and stayed in the region of 1400-1500 for next couple of minutes before settling down to comfortable 700-800.

As suggested, will take it to local T's garage and see what the say and how much they want to fleece me...

iscv is controlled partly by water temperature. An inlet or outelt pipe may be blocked with sludge, therfore impeding the wax sensor performance. remove the pipes from beneath the Throttle Housing and check them.

It could also be that the sensor isn't at fault but the water in the system actually stays cold for a long period. This would indicate that your thermostat is continiously open. Other symptoms of this is the heater. When the air also stays cold for a longer period, it's your thermostat.
