I heard (...on the grapevine...) that an iPod cradle can be fitted into a yaris where the cig tray is? Is this true? If so, is it costly and does it run through the standard toyota cd player?

Why don't you just buy a iPod iTrip! It broadcasts your tunes of your ipod on a frequency which you choose and then all you have to do is tune your radio in to that channel! The sound is very good aswell!
