Why do Insurance companies charge me almost double for my Japanese Import MR2, when there is very little difference in Spec?

Posted

Because without stripping the car down they don't know what the differences are.

I am still waiting for a door handle (interior) and door card for a Subaru limited run from over 3.5 years ago. They are still trying to source one as Subaru will not make one.

Try Tesco. I found that in an effort to get new business they waved the penalty for Imports. Not sure if they are still doing it but give them a try.

I found Elephant very good, also AON are doing good deals and cover trackday's as well....

Tesco is the company I am currently with and they dont seem to adopt that strategy anymore. I am looking to renew in June so if anyone knows of any companies that specialise in insuring Japanese imports then it would be handy to know.

Thanks for all the replies, much appreciated.

Hi

Try Lifesure Ltd St Neots Tel 01480 474604 i did mine over the phone

and the policy was at my home 2 days later.

£443.16 fully comp inc legal and claims protection + loan car

even if you are at fault

£300 Cheaper than tesco but the excess is high at £400

but you will find that all the companys have a high excess.

Only £50 excess for windscreen wich is a bit cheap but whos complaining.

Cheers for that - I'll give them a call.

Hopefully they wont discriminate against under 25's like a lot of companies do.

I am from malta, but i wanted to say something from what i read on toyotaownersclub forum, MOT tests apparantly are done in comparisin with a UK spec, while a non UK available spec engine/car, is submitted to generic tests.

Eg. a 4E-FTE engine can have its catalyst removed since no UK spec 4E-FTE exists.

So for cars that a UK spec exists, why isn't the same insurance scheme adopted, just like MOT standards are adopted for Jap cars that have a UK spec ver.

Try dorset insurance 01202302888- you must be a mr2 oc member. I saved nearly £400 on my ins. on my turbo. B)

First of all hello ! First time here...

I'm looking to get my hands on a MR2 GT-Turbo T-Bar...

I can't get a decent quote anywhere !

I'm 23yr and have had my license for about 3 months or so.

The cheapest quote I have had is for £2387 from elephant.co.uk , now that's crazy !

Is this normal ? Is this what I should expect? I'm waiting on dorset sending me out a quote tomorrow... Somewhere even quoted me £4500 !! ... another company basically laughed at me.. lol.

Not funny ! Anyone else in my situation, and my age ? Just curious as to how much others are paying and what I should expect to pay. Also if anyone could recommend anyhwere ?

I currently pay £800 for my 1.6i 16v Megane Coupe... £4,000 isn't even funny .. lol :o

I just used confused.com and got a low quote for £1400...

The highest I got was £8000 !! Bluddy hell !!

Still waiting on dorset sending me out a written quote tho...

Posted

Try Adrian Flux.... one of the very few places that will insure my supercharger at a very reasonable rate.... they do imports to BTW... ;)

Posted

Hi,

Yes I am in the same situation. Im currently paying 2400 for my non-turbo Mr2 (which Im sure you will agree is even more ridiculous).

However, in June when this insurance runs out I have got a quote from Dorset insurance for 1030 quid.

It seems companies enjoy laughing at people as young as us with sports cars (especially imports).

I tried confused.com too - but I got no quotes due to age and import (I imagine you will be the same)

Another thing Jimlad,

Be careful if your car is an import. Two companies quoted me reasonable prices - then went back on their word because the wrong car had been quoted for (1.6i Mr2 - as opposed to my 2.0 Mr2 Import). They then proceeded to double that quote.

Jimlad, if your 23 it may be worth considering an NA for a couple of years, still great fun and great cars and still quick to drive....

Alternatively could save money on initial costs by buying a Mk1 Supercharger, there are a coupleof mint ones available at the minute although they are pretty rare cars....

I've had the please of driving on and also being passenger in a couple around various tracks and they are absolutely amazing.

By saving on the initial cost of buying one you could then put the extra money into the insurance...

Just an idea :)

 Hello

This is the 1st time iv'e contributed to this forum. I phoned all over the UK and could not get a quote less than £1000. But, i did find a company who are respectable in the North West called Frizzel/Liverpool Victoria Insurance based in Liverpool. Unfortunately i do not have the number to hand, try directory enquiry for the number.

I told them of all the modifications i have had done to my MRII and they quoted me £700 fully comprehensive.

I hope this can be of some assistance to those who are looking for car insurance. I must admit though, when JENKO said he had a reasonable quote from TESCO. I laughed, because they were the most expensive of around £2500.

I hope this information will help.

Regards,

Whazza

Shows how bizarre the world of insurance is, tesco's were one of the cheapest for me while Liverpool Victoria were one of the most expensive...

I know Jimlad, he's a mate, but I didnt know he was on here.... he's only getting an MR2 coz I took him out in mine :P :P

Insurance is never bad if you are prepared to shop around. My car is an import and it made little difference on my quote. Its the T-Bar bit they didnt like..lol.

Posted

With my car ( soon to be here ! )... It's the Turbo bit they didn't like... lol

Just to let you know, I got insurance finally.

A quote from Tescos for Third party fire and theft for £1300...

and

Fully comp from Dorset fot £1400 ....

Stupid ruddy expensive Jap car... NOT.. Can't wait until it arrives.

Now then... anyone wanna buy my Megane ?

i had loads of trouble finding insurance for my mr2 turbo. some wouldn't insure because of my mods, others because i'm only 22, others wouldn't touch imports. dorset the mr2dc club scheme are normally good value for turbos, i know loads of turbo owners with them, inc me. i pay 1000 with all mods declared. adrian flux can match quotes or beat them but they offered me an excess of 750!! dorset gave me 120 (plus 150 young persons excess)

Posted

Yep - Dorset were the ones that came through in the end.

Im now paying less for my MR2 fully comp than I was paying for my PUG 1.9Gti third party with Tesco - life doesnt get any better!
