Truck Starting Issues, Please Help

Hello, I have a problem with my truck and I am at my wits end with it. Ill list what I have and what Ive done, any help would be great.

91' Toyota Pickup Hilux

6 Cyl, 2 wheel dr, Auto

The problem is after I drive some where, and turn the truck off, when I come back, it doesnt start, I turn t he key, and hear a click from the starter and a high pitch whinning sound. Some times on rare occasions if I keep turning the key over and over it will start. Its a real pain because I cant go anywhere and not expect to be there anywhere from 2 to 6 hours. It will start if I get a jump. Which makes me think it could be a issue of the starter not getting enough power. Now here is a list of what I have changed and done to try to fix the problem.

Changed the starter (multiple times)

New Battery

New spark plugs and wires

New distributor cap

Ground wires

Please please please if you have any suggestions let me know. I dont have thousands to pour into it but I need to get this fixed. Its been going on for over 4 years now. So any help, please, let me know it would be greatly appreciated.

Its possible that the drive plate ring gear that the starter pinion engages with has worn or even has missing teeth. It may be possible to check if this is the cause of your problem. If there is an inspection plate on the bell housing you could remove it and check the teeth, you can fit a wrench on the crankshaft pulley nut to turn the engine over so you can check right around. Failing that you could remove the starter and do the check there. Unfortunately if that does turn out to be your problem you will need to drop the transmission out. Your cheapest option may be to source a used torque converter from a breakers yard complete with the drive plate (the drive plate is bolted to the torque converter)a new one from Toyota will undoubtedly be expensive. I would only really expect this on a high miler or on a vehicle that has a history of stop-start driving like a delivery truck. Anyway hope it helps, good luck.

Thanks for reply, I dont think its that because when I put in a new starter it works great for a week, then it starts doing this. Same way with all 4 or 6 starters Ive put in there, some were Bosh rebuilds and the one now is a Toyota OEM.

Yes but maybe the new teeth get just enough purchase on the worn ring to make it work for a while, then as soon as there is any wear you are back to square one and your problem recurrs.
