im getting about 40 miles for £10 of superunleaded which works out to be about 16MPG i think??? - thats if i thrash it.

and about 50 miles for £10 if i take it very easy - about 20MPG i think????.

this cant be right surely? ive changed the air filter recently so it cant be that

or perhaps its my maths... petrol is costing me about 85.9pence per litre

please help... i swear its costing me the world to get anywhere!

Thats way off m8 , last week i put £20 off optimax in (87.9p) and went and did 23 runs on the 1/4 mile strip and driving about and still got 160 miles from it , on monday night i put in another £20 worth and im on 140 miles with a 1/4 of a tank to go till its used up, u should be getting mpg in the 30's m8 ..

A good way to increase ur mpg is ditch the cat and get as de cat pipe m8

from £10 of regular unleaded i get between 85 to 100 miles ,thats mostly urban driving.depending on driving style.1 time i put £35 in and returned 260 miles +.

if after 50 miles the petrol light flickers keep on driving until it lights up permamantly mine does this but i keep going and clock up the extra 30 miles or so.

maybe your lambda is knackered , try resetting the ecu see if that helps

No your maths is good. Like maleborn says could be your lambda sensor has failed. Does the car feel ok when you drive? Does it pull smoothly? If you roll along at about 5MPH then put it in neutral does it stop like you've got the brakes on? If so you could have a sticking brake caliper. If you drive at 40MPH in 4th gear then floor the accelerator does the engine speed up before the car accelerates? if so your clutch could be slipping.

clutch is fine. Pulls smoothly unless i use standard unleaded then it jolts.

brakes are fully free. unseized em all when i got the car... rolls for ages.

how do i test the lamda? why wud reseting ecu make a difference?

how do i reset it?

cheers

firstly have the timing set so you can run unleaded .to reset the ecu take off the earth lead for 5 mins, or take out fuses , hazzards, efi and ecu ,for 5 mins then replace , it may make no difference but wont kill to try it.you have to check the lamda sensor for voltage , goto www.justlambda.co.uk for advice.

dont really wanna reset the timing... would rather it remained how it should.

ive alreadying had the Battery disconnected for at least 5 mins before and has made no difference :(.

ill look into the lambda. BTW where abouts is it on ours?

Hi All

I've got a shockingly similar problem to cookci (same mileage) and I have done all the checks listed but I have come a cropper follow the info on mr2-tech link.

It all seems relatively straight forward to follow, but it mentions some tool called an SST that looks not unlike a pair of tweezers. Is this one of those ever useful things that Toyota secreet around the car or something to purchase...

...or could I use an alternative thing?

or should I just go to someone who knows what they're doing?

I would be interested to know what if anything cookci found.

Just get yourself a paper clip and straighten it out into a U shape. Or just get a short length of wire and bare both ends. SST is short for Special Service Tool and there are often ways of getting round using the real thing. Take a look here too, there is a picture and an explanation of what the codes mean when you check the ECU for fault codes http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/codes/

just to make clear the codes on that site are for the mr2 not to be confused with celicas , celis have different fault codes.

OH !!! OK , its just that when my celica's abs system went down , error codes were 31,32,34,35,and 11 non of which appear on that site .so i was warning peeps not to take the codes for granted and start ripping the car apart thinking the codes for brakes are actually lamda sensor error codes.:thumbsup:

Thanks for that.

Me and my trusty paper clip came up with an error code of 21, pointing straight to a lamda error of some sort. Which I did kind of suspect.

So its off to the lambda shop for me.
