Cost Of Replacing Parts On A '89 Gt4

Hi,

I was originally going to get me a '97 GT4 but after looking at the costs... I had to call it a day. :(

Today however i was taking my Corolla in to get front tyres, and low and behold, a '89 Gt4 at the tire place... So i has a look at it, and admire it... Looks very tidy on initial inspection, except for chessy "need for speed" style alloys... (i prefer rally style alloys.) So chatting back and forth to the mechanic at the place and i find out it's his... and hes selling it... :)

Right so the problems i need help on:

1/ He offered £1700 for it (mileage 125000/ Has had a dump valve fitted and the following wrong with it)

This sound reasonable?

2/ One of the back break disks is badly scratched any ideas on cost to fix?

3/ Speedometer doesnt work, apparently the cable is ok so its somthing else. Any ideas on probable costs

Of course if i can raise the cash i'll be all over the car with a fine tooth comb for any underlying problems just seeing if even considering it is worth it...

Any thoughts???

Thanks

As far as i know they can be a little pricey for parts but that goes

without saying when you buy a toyota :D

But at the same time if its a uk model the it probably wont be to bad

try the gt4 owners club for more info on common faults with the car

check if he has had the turbo reconditioned... thats about the km when mine went!! They have no real problems that stand out as far as I have discovered in my ownership... the dif mount apparently is a common little thing that seems to wear out on most of the 4WD toyotas incl caldinas, celicas, coronas etc. They have no more problems than any other car out there in my opinion... less if any and they are strong as... mine has copped some abuse over the years and made the trip home at xmas (jsut over 1000km) many times with no worries at all.

Make sure the cam belt was changed at around the 120k mark and make sure that the clutch is fairly new. Apparently its the best part of £1000 to replace.

Thanks for the input keep it coming :) The turbo does concern me, as i was speaking to mate (owns a SAAB 9000 Aero) Also the speedometer "breaking" may just be disconnected to keep the mileage down.. :( hope not either way if works quiet this week im off for a test drive hehe

there was a thread on here I think a while ago about it. Apparently on the 4 you have to take the engine out to do it which is one reason its so expensive.

Yeah thats absolutely right. 10 Hours for my mechanic to do it!!! Plus parts... god bless staff discount... It retails at approx $900 in NZ if thats any guide. How often do you replace a clutch tho?? I mean in the overall scheme of things its not that bad.

i accept that , but knowing my luck i'll be the 1 who has to replace it if i buy a gt4,and at 6k for the motor dont wanna be shelling out another grand for a clutch , even a warranty i dont think covers the clutch.

Had my clutch replaced few months back. Cost me NZ$750. Problem is they damaged some or other seal (so I've been told) and it's leaking oil. Best to take the motor out. Costs more but less trouble later

ohh right well then thats mint as. Do you need to take the whole engine out to do a 2WD clutch. I thought that it was jsut the 4WD ones as the transfer gets in the way???
