Just done my Derby - Norwich - Derby run to take my daughter back to university and only got 48.5 mph on the 370 mile journey. Drove as I normally do and would expect about 53 mpg on that run.

OK the car was very heavy on the outward leg but wasn't on the way back.

Possible reasons?

  • Heavy load going and strong headwinds coming back
  • A dud tank of fuel? Can you get petrol with a lower calorific value than normal?
  • Not playing Radio 2 - the passengers wouldn't allow it.

Hope this is a one-off. :(

It's got to be the Radio 2 issue! On the rare occasions that I drive ours I get much better mileage than Jim, and I insist on Radio 2 - he prefers Centre FM or some such rubbish.

On the other hand, it is very windy, some fuels do give poorer fuel economy and you may have been tired, resulting in a heavier than normal foot.

I wondered about the driving style but most of the way was on cruise at 75ish which is what I normally do.

I'll see what the next tank full does.

Hi Braindead,

48 mpg, **** that's dissappointing. It hurts doesn't it when you don't get the mileage you think you should get. Since getting mine, I've never registered below 50 mpg, but most of my runs are long ones when I can take it easy. I have noticed that I can only get satifactory MPG at or about 60 to 65 MPG. If did 75 I know I would get bad consumption. Sometimes I forget the conservative driving and accellerate hard and drive fast, but not for the whole tank. Can usually make up the MPG later on safely in the inside lane at overtaking lorry speed. Do u use cruise as much as possible? When on good roads I do all my accelleration, easing of with the CC and only go manual if I really have to. Tyre pressure?, of course the wind would also be a big killer if in wrong direction i spose...

All the best

BudJar

Ah BTW. Finally got my grant from EST £700 quid. Guy at Toyota told me it's turning out to be a right fiasco for those that ordered after April 1st.

The fuel economy on all cars is set by the epa and not by the manufacturer. Toyotas 2004 prius gets approx. 45-48 mpg on , yet its labled at 60mpg. toyota knows this is inaccuate, but is not allowed to decide what the mpg are advertised at. The prius will also get better mpg in city over hwy.

After two full tanks of fuel I can report an average of 53 mpg on my normal routes. I personally think this is spot on . I used to achieve exactly the same economy in my old car and that was half the size and made of aluminium to save weight . I also think the performance is significantly better, especially with respect to throttle response. I think the electric motor must help here as all my other automatics have that annoying pause when you floor it while it kicks down.

Still really chuffed with my choice.

Minor gripe: on A/C auto the windscreen mists up all the time in cold weather so I regularly have to press demist - which is no real hardship i suppose, especially with the controls at your fingertips.

Funny, my screen can mist at the beginning of a journey but seems OK after that. You don't have recirculate on do you?

Anyway, winter is upon us....mpg typically around 47-48mpg now as I would expect. Have to wait till spring to get it up again. Engine runs more in the winter.
