Malfunction Indicator Lamp

I am a new Toyota owner (new for me) of a 1995 Corolla. The "malfunction indicator lamp" has just come on. Does this involve only the quality of emissions or soething detrimental to the operation of the car? Also, is there any do-it -yourself diagnostic device that I can get that will tell me where the specific problems are for warning lights like this?

Most warning lamps will flash a code of long and short flashes to reveal what the error is if you have the know how (must be available on the net somewhere?)

The check engine light is normally a little more serious than emissions i would have thought, best to get it on a Toyota computer and see whats up.

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM

BUT THE FIX FOR ME WASSIMPLE.

I HAD A SNAPTED CABLE IF YOU CHECK ON YOU HEAD THERE ARE TWO PLUGS THAT FIT ON THE SIDE OFF THE HEAD WHICH HIS ORANGE AND GREEN THESE CABLES HAD SNAPTED.
