New Ecu & Air Filter Cap Fitted

Hi Guys,

I am a Sportivo owner from Australia or T-Sport to you guys in Europe or RunX RSi to those in South Africa. Over the last 6 months the guys in South Africa have been going through a process of proving that the car isnt putting out the 141KW as advertised by toyota.

This has proven to be true.

In South Africa the cars are being recalled and being fitted with new ECU's and a modded air filter cover that allows the car to breath a bit more.

This has now started to occur in Australia as well and i have had it done to my car and their is a noticable difference in mid-range torque and power and overall performance

So to my question i was just wondering have you guys heard or been doing anything about this in Europe ? Is it even a problem with your cars ?

Cheers

Bill

How much power were these models down on?

Would be intresting to see if they realy are putting out 189 bhp, i always find the mid range a little disapointing

Hi all. I was extensively involved in the recall process of the South African cars. The extent of my involment included being the representative of the South African owners and I was fortunate enough to have a meeting with the CEO and President of Toyta South Africa as well as the vice President and an array of technical representatives.

The European owners, have no need to concern themselvews regarding these upgrades. It seems that the Japanese engineers programmed the ECU's to be exceptionally conservative for the SA and Australian market because of the pure fuel quality. Timing advanced to a mximun of 21 degrees representing an ECU 93 RON map. Timing is now advanced to 24 degrees (mimicking a 98 RON map, consistent with the European owners. Whats interesting is thatthe 98 RON mapping is safe for use on 93 RON fuel, which shows that there is a huge buffer built into the 98 RON map. A piggy back system that advances your timing to 28 degrees in conjusntion with a 63 mm tail pipe will promise at least 145kW at the fly. Some engines will see over 150kW.

Hi mikaelhoglund,

Yes Unichip is a piggy back system. I had one of these on my car for a while before getting my ECU changed due to the recall in Australia and we use Unichip Type C for our sportivo.

Cheers

Toyota claimed that the flywheel power on the vehicles prior to ther upgrade was approximately 130kW. I think it was around 126 kW

This is not consistent with my European Corolla operation manuals, Enlish and Greek. 95 is the minimum gasoline requirement, not 98.

Whilst 95RON is the minimum fuel specified, the mapping is 98RON compliant.
