Cts

Well, now things are clear, just let me tell you what I think about the CTS.

First of all, much to my surprise, I've been noticing all these "build quality" problems around. I've had the rattles from the passenger seat and a loose glovebox but, owing the CTS for 52 Mm now (early 2002 model), rattles have gone away (and fixed the glovebox myself)... The car is perfect again! And then again, I had no single pure mechanical issue (yes Nick, I know your story about serious engine issues). And I have been reading only issues associated with noises, rattles, squeaks and stuff but no actual mechanical failure. So, for my CTS, build quality is superb (interior materials also best in class).

The large deficit of CTS is suspension. It is soft, it has the longest stroke around, the car sits too high, it leans, pitches and tilts and generally, everything is wrong with this part of the car! So what do we do? WE CHANGE IT! And we install any decent coilover system. I just fitted the KW Variante 2 (for 1.5 kEuro). Result? I am not going to say much: I just believe I have the fastest atmospheric 1.8 hatch around.... or the fastest airconditioned atmospheric hatch around!

Wow, Honda just discovered the Rankine cycle!!!! :hokus-pokus:

Could you narrow it down a little, what part of the Rankine cycle are you referring to!

For me it's so much fun reading these comments about the fact that everyone's got a CTR and stuff... Here in Russia there are about a 100 CTR's and FIVE (!!!) Corolla T-Sports! (All pre-facelift). And if I order one (which i'm planning to do), it will be the FIRST 3d E12 corolla officially drought into Russia!!! How's that!

The only problem is the mechanics... they've never seen this car... Might have some BIG problems if something major gets broken.

Here the CTR comes out CHEAPER than the CTS (same insurance group (6% of the value) but the CTR is depreciates much less)...

This really a very rich third world country! Just think of it: MB sells more S600 limousines than honda sells civic's!!!

And, since i've lived in greece for 5 years hello to the greek fellows!

Kai ego thelo to t-sport!!! Kai thelo ti zesti pia kanei stin elada!!! Edo einai poli krio!!! Gia sas!

Well Nick seems to like to push the car really hard. The CTS is not a race car! It's a car that can go fast if you need to, but i wouldn't be using it on the track. It's just no built for it, and toyota do emphasize this by not reducing weight, not stiffening it. Yes, it is probably embarassing when you get beaten by the CTR, but you just have to live with it. I'd say just sit down in those comfy leather seats, and look at the CTR's from high above! You're in different leagues, and ours is a much higher one!

A japanese reviever said that the CTS is a car that opens it's owner a world of his own, that noone can undersand - and for that alone it's a worthy investment.

I fully agree with him. For me, top-end performance isn't important. Nither is the fact that the gen public doesn't say WOW! when you park your cts. Once in a while a person who also knows what the cts is will come up and say: "great car!". His word's will be worth hundred's of those silly looks from the crowd!

Frankly speaking, I do not understand why you don't prefer the CTR since it is cheaper and there will be much more experience in Moscow's service stations.

The Corolla may present problems you would not expect from a Toyota car. I have realized many sources of rattles around the car that cannot be repaired in a reasonable time by the mechanics. I think it is difficult for them to locate the problem and solve it.

Apparently the design/engineering of the parts and assembly of the car had very relaxed specs.

Honestly speaking, even here, everyone knows about the CTR. And everyone says WOW when they see one. They know a bit about what it is...

I've got a Honda HR-V right now and it's only '01 and already has a burned clutch... Although i know that i might just be unlucky, like Nick. :(. My friend drives a CTR hard everyday and has had no problems with it..

I want a Corrola. Everyone here thinks it's a crap car. And i need a low-profile car (for a minute, im a 20 y/o student)!

Its really strange as now I have my Type-R I feel I don’t have to drive everywhere at Mach 3, as it is a proven piece of machinery I am quite happy just to cruise around knowing if I do stamp on the loud peddle I have the power there.

This is the main fundamental difference between the two cars, I felt whilst driving the T-Sport you always had a point to prove as to many people wanted to question it performance, daft I know!

The Corolla is not a crap car far from it, I had some of my best driving moments behind the wheel of my CTS, I just feel the Civic was a good next step up for me it’s a great weekend car and track tool and suits me perfectly for now!

EXON16M thanks fella, sounds like I have upset him!

Nick

 Whats he talking about!

exon16m and Nick, this is what upset me and I am in no case jealous of the CTR :lol:

However, just to be honest with you, I just think Nick has some commercial interest with advertising his CTR. All he does is that he goes all around this forum to find people complaining about their Corollas and just supports these arguments. And I just believe that his hesitation to change or keep his CTS and the immediate purchase of an anniversary CTR.... come on now Nick!

Yeah, Honda have started an undercover operation. It is called forum war. Double-agent Nick-Johnson has been sent behing the enemy lines to capture a dozen of the most strategically crucial customers! CTR retail figures really look very dull. If only they could just get a few of the millions of CTS buyers on their side...

SKG,

I cant believe you think I am trying to commercially advertise the Honda Civic Type-R here on TOC, Honda spend enough money on doing that I am merely making my opinion which I am surly aloud to do.

I had some pretty serious problems with my 2002 Corolla T-Sport which left a bitter taste in my mouth if I am honest, I hear you say I drove my car hard but this is hardly true either you cant tell me that Toyota warns you can only use your “LIFT ZONE” once a week or your engine will explode! To exploit the cars full potential you have to work the car but that’s all part of owning a car with a free revving power plant you must agree with me on that!

I am not on here to moan about my experience owning a Toyota as I have said in many previous posts I had some fantastic times with the T-Sport but unfortunately there wasn’t enough to warrant my third car in as many years to be another Toyota.

For my weekend use the Honda fits the bill perfectly its a great country lane blast and is excellent on the track it is everything I want in a car at the moment.

I am not trying to promote this car as I know there is some people on here very happy with their T-Sports at the end of the day you pays your money and you take your choice!

Nick

Come on guys, you can't be serious about this!

Everybody knows that cars come and go. Today you might think that your hatch is the best car that can be, but then grow up and not even realize cars smaller than executive limos!!!

You cant blame a person for changing his mind!

Actually my dad says stuff like:

"How can you want that small japanese crap!" although he himself had a rolla 15 years ago and thought it was superb!

Nick,

Thank you for the clarifications. I am not the one to say who may or not may talk in this forum. Far from that actually.

However, I also feel I have the right to inform the forum that your only contribution is to follow-up discussions which post CTS problems. Well, this gives me some concern.

I also love my CTS and I have great time with it. I have had no mechanical problems and I lift it everyday since the day I bought it (Apr 26, 2002)!

My problem is that whenever I visit this forum to exchange some information with other CTS owners, I just find a post of you mentioning that in the past you had problems with your two CTSs and that your CTR is now superb. Ok, point taken. My personal opinion is that the CTR is totally ugly and I don't feel well sitting in this car. Full stop.

But this is a Corolla/Toyota forum and I don't feel anyone is really excited to discuss about other cars (at least for long). So, please, if you have something more to share then please do, otherwise just go on with CTR forums.

Its funny everything going on in this forum, I've always wanted a Civic Type R, I test drove one and thought "oh man I so like this", I also personally think its a nice looking car but so's my new T-Sport, I then drove a T Sport and thought "humm I like this as well" then when I considered everything I wanted from a car the T Sport started to appeal more than the Civic.

I've only done 150 miles in my new TS but I love it, its super quiet, smooth, well specced and its returning pretty good MPG (at least while i'm running it in).

And for me I've made the right decision, however Nick is surely entitled to his own opinion and I'm sure he would be the first to agree for every bad T Sport there will be 1000 good ones and the same applies to the Civic Type R they have problems with these as well you know, its a matter of horses for courses, make your own decisions, your all big boys now... :group-cuddles:

A CTS owner (Tunix) has written the following comment in a different topic, which fully describes my feelings and probably those of Nick-Johnson's and others:

"..One day you love it because of its performance, another day you hate it because of strange sounds, vibrations, and couple of other "issues"....."

Nick-Johnson's comments are really needed to keep a balance with those wanting to hide problems.

I think any views are welcome here, i have a list of things i want looked at purely from looking at post's i think some people (like myself) find it hard to explain to the service people correctly what the problems are with the car.

As far as Nick goes yeah he has a CTR but having 2 CTS's in the past i think his points are more than welcome.

What you are saying is utter rubbish SKG, if you took some time out and read some of my earlier posts on this forum you would find that I don’t just post in anti T-Sport threads.

For your information I joined this forum on the 21 June 2002 well over 2 years ago now after purchasing my Yaris T-Sport and feel I have contributed a fair bit helping other owners and I’m very rarely told that my posts are not welcome.

For you to say the Civic is ugly well that’s debatable as I think both cars are very similar in looks but your welcome to your point of view just seems a little petty to start name calling others cars!

And finally yes I am aware of this been a Corolla forum and the model still interests me hence the reason I still post on here, all I feel is Toyota needs to improve on its overall package of the CTS to keep up with the every improving Hot Hatch market a fair point in my opinion but this still do not elude the fact it is still a good car!

Nick
