You want the roads further north, try the Applecross peninsula and the Bealach na Ba (Pass of the cattle) rises from sea level to 2000ft and down again in about 7 miles. Picture ;)

There sure are some class roads up here!! Get yourself to the scottish mini meet on sunday, its in Glasgow!! Not too far from Gourock!!

Are you from Newcastle or that area thenemywithin? (or am I thinking of someone else?? lol)

If so, the A68 isnt a bad road on the way up, then there a few other wee roads too. But maybe take a wee bit longer than going to Carlisle first and up from there!

That's a real road! I've posted a photo of the sign at the bottom before...

Might be a bit far from Gourock though <_<
