Buying A 80 Tercel Hacthback Need Info

im about to buy a 1980 tercel and im wanting some info on it im not sure if its a 5 or 4 speed i havent seen it but the kid said he put a new clutch in it and after that it wouldnt go into to gears right or something im wanting to know what kind of engine swaps or mods i could do it.

It should have an a series engine in it, i think its a 3A?

On the engine at the front or on the rocker cover there will be a plate stating the engine type.

If it is a 3A, you could put in any A series engine like:

4AGE from the corolla GT

4AGZE supercharged

4AGE 20valve

7AFE 1800cc

AS for power its up to you anywhere in the region of 130bhp std form to 210bhp in wild trim.
