Gt4 Fan Not Working

my celica gt4 is overheating , I'm going to change the thermostat tommorow but

I've also noticed that the fan behind the radiator isn't working even when the engine is overheating ??

What can I do to get the fan working again ??

I've checked the fuse and that looks ok , the 1 in the fuse box in the corner marked fan , it appears to be ok , is this the right fuse for the fan ?

Thanks for your help

Jonathan

look in 1 corner of the radiator , should be a sensor that controls the on off effect of the radiator fan.try joining the 2 connections with a paperclip see if the fan comes on then

Yeah check this before you change the stat! It could be that thats causing it to overheat.

Does it over heat whilst on a run or just while your stood still?

Have you also checked your coolant level to make sure it's nothing more serious ............like a head gasket? (god forgive on a GT4  )

if the heat is getting into the car , the themostat has nothing to do with the fan operation.

it is only overheating when driving , it really overheats after driving for only 3-4 minutes

but when i stop it doesn't cool down either , it just stays really hot , just below H, and the fan doesn't come on

the coolant level appears to be ok , i put some more in though just to be safe

would the fan not working cause it to overheat that bad ????

the fan did work before , but now doesn't

where abouts is the sensor that i need to bypass is it in the bottom corner or top corner ?????

Thanks

Jonathan

the fan is controlled by a sensor in the lower part of the radiator , get a new one or bridge the 2 connections for now for permanent fan on ,if the car is getting hot on the inside the thermostat is opening fine , if no heat inside the car the thermostat could be jammed , thus keeping all the heat around the engine.thermostats from toyota is the best bet , dont get a copy , celica water works are sensitive and should be given repect and genuine parts only fitted for true peace of mind.if its overheating whilst driving that could lead to or even be cylinder head gasket malfunction , so be very carefull my friend.

Just try unpluggin the switch in the radiator... Its part of a failsafe that if the switch fails the fan runs all the time on my 185... its a normally closed switch. If the fan isnt running then this is the problem but to be honest you may have done more damage than you are aware of...generlaly as long as there is airflow thru the engine liek 30mph or over the raidator will work efficiently so there may be other problems if it is hot all the time.

sounds like your stat needs changing ASAP. either that or you have a blockage in the cooling system. Does the heater in the car work?

like GT four NZ says, you don't realy need your fan when driving above 30MPH as the radiator has enough air passing over it to keep the engine water cool so that shouldn't be the problem but does need sorting out, try another fan?

Probably won't be your head gasket either if you are not losing coolant.

thanks for all your help and advice

me and a mate managed to change the thermostat , after taking all the air filter box off and ending up on the wrong side of the engine !!!

I found an online manual and managed to locate it and after a bit of knuckle scraping we managed to change it

Now it sits perfect in the middle and the fan works and everything

I'm chuffed that its fixed ,so I gave my mate a drive for fixing it ,

it didn't go very well at first , flooding the engine , wouldn't drive over 60 mph !

after a few checks we hadn't tightened the air intake onto the intercooler enough as we were working in the dark

tightened that up and now its fixed and driving again !
