98 Corolla Acceleration Problems

I just purchased a 98 corolla 5sp with the 1.8L engine, and 174k km. Just had an oil change. I haven't even finished a whole tank of gas yet.

Everything was good until yesterday. If I accelerate any more than slightly the car seems to run rough or jump like the car is sputtering. I was driving at about 100 km/h in 5th and tried to accelerate, the car started "jumping" and then the check engine light started flashing. I stopped the car, the light went away, drove home trying to accelerate as slowly as possible. The light didn't come back on, but once in awhile I'd still get the roughness.

I'm no mechanic, but what has entered my mind is possible issues with: fuel pump, injectors, oxygen sensor.

Somebody must have encountered this before. Thanks.

Hi,

Not sure if this will be of any help to you, but the exact same thing happened to my mother's Vauxhall Carlton on the way to the airport a couple of weeks back.

Had to plug it into diagnostics, and it turned out it was the camshaft sensor gone bad. Got the garage to change this (independent) and the problem went away. Cost about 90 pounds.
