My First Toyota Needs Smog Help

hi.

I just bought a toyota corolla 1988, the engine is carburated.

The previous owner had it smogged in june 04, and it BARELY passed. HC are high. Maybe he brought it in cold?

any ideas to help "guarantee" pass smog?

I will take the car in to smog fully warmed up. I changed the oil, replaced the air filter. Distrubuter and rotor look ok, and plug wires have 20k ohm, and plugs look ok too. has 170k, but a rebuilt engine 8 months old. All the linkages on the carb seem ok. Smells rich in the morning (choke not working right I think)
