I've got one of these too! Had my Lucida for over 4 years and it's rattled ever since I got it. No-one knows for sure what it is, but 50,000k later it's no worse so it can't be serious.

It does it a bit when cold, as it warms up it goes and sounds great, then when it gets to normal temp it starts again. General opinion is it's a hydraulic tappit which is noisy by no problem. The only way to find out is drop the engine, and replace the tappits, but until you put it back together you won't know if its solved the problem, and if a garage does the job its 100s of pounds!

A mate of mine cured a similar problem in a VW air cooled van by using synthetic oil, but I use diesel part synthetic anyway.

Still, I love the thing. Keeps going, never failed an MOT. Thinking about a Granvia cos my biggest nag is the Lucida doesn't like hills. Wondered if that's the rattle and some compression problem, or are they all rubbish up hills? Not a lot of info on Granvias is there? What's the most mpg anyone's got out of them.

Cheers

you don't say whether a diesel?? If so then noise could be vacuum pump on rhs of engine. Put a screwdriver on it and to your ear after removing drivers seat and accessing below. You will hear it loud and clear. Very expensive Toyota replacement part - but mine was repaired by local machine shop for £70. Sorry this is too late but I only just picked up the query.

Hi Chris. Yes its a diesel, thought they all were. Not thought about the vacuum pump, I'll try it this weekend - how did you know, was the engine not running right? I don't read this list much, so delay's no prob! Noise is in engine I think. I've done the screwdriver thing on the cylinder head and it's loud!

I had a problem with the front prop shaft cv joints and they sound like the car's going to fall apart... when the car was on the ramp at the garage I had another guy work on it (usual bloke was away) and he was saying there's so many noises, which one!!!! We listened to the engine on the sump with the screwdriver, and it was scarily loud there too, and we couldn't work it out. Like I say, nearly 30,000 miles later it's no worse, so can't see it's a problem apart from the fact it's there. You don't hear it when your driving and it's only on tickover with the radio off it's noticeable.

It's just passed it's MOT and I think it's time to get another one or a Granvia, so I'm looking around...

Anyone know how to put a price on these vehicles other than comparing ads?

Cheers, Clive

Hi, We've narrowed our clacking lucy down to a tappit thing, more to be precise, according to my brother in law guru, a hydrolic lifter. Is it really not too big a deal to get it sorted straight away. People are starting to look at us at junctions but on the plus side it does scare passing children.

These moters are bad news for the knock sensors which live on the top of the engine once you have all the covers off, its a single wire and they fault all the time.

If it is a noisey lifter try and hunt down a product called PROMAR MBL8, you mix it in with your oil and it shuts lifters up. I suggest trying a Mitsubushi agent because in New Zealand they recomend and use it in most services. It works within 5 minutes. Good luck!!!!!!!

the knocking noise on my estima was the bushes at the end of the shaft from the engine to the aircon/alternator, this is a typical problem on these cars,,,,,
