Newbie - With A High Speed Idle Question...

Hi there, I'm a newbie to this site - what a cool resource!

I just got a '95 Carina -E 1.6GS estate as a runaround (to carry new baby around & keep miles off my Elise in the winter).

I got it chaeap as spares or repair, because it has a problem with the idle speed & the dealer couldn't bothered to fix it. It failed it's MOT only on emissions at idle (fine at revs) + a couple of bulbs - so if I can get it sorted will be a bit of a bargain!

I'm looking for some help to diagnose the problem. :help:

It had been sat around for 6 months & one of the injectors went bad, resulting in a misfire. Following installation of a new one (dealer did this) the idle speed now runs at 1500rpm. It doesn't seem to fluctuate & doesn't change once the engine is warm. Engine runs like a dream otherwise.

Is it likely to be the idle speed control valve? If so - will removing it & cleaning it be any good - or do I need a new part? Anyone know where I can source one (cheap!). If has the 4A-FE engine (I think?).

That's about it - thanks in advance for any help

Quick fix is to reset the ECU and this should provide default settings and allow the ECU to relearn the driving style. The ISCV could be sticking so take the air hose off the throttle body and try some WD40 just in the inlet beforev the butterfly. You should see a small opening where the air bypasses a closed butterfly. Else you need to remove the whole throttle assembly (2 bolts, 2 nuts) and disconnect the water pipes. Then you can get at the ISCV. Watch that the gasket is not damaged when you open it up.

You must be psychic/telepathic!

Managed to do exactly what you suggested on Monday/Tuesday evening - remove the throttle body & give the whole thing a jolly good clean. Put it back together & idle speed back down.

Car scraped through emissions test (will probably need to get new ISCV eventually though) & passed MOT yesterday!! All I spent was a few quid on a few bulbs - so a real bargain!

Thanks for your advice :hokus-pokus:
