I'm thinking of buying a T3/4 1.8 automatic. Could anybody tell me if there are any problems with them and what I should look out for?

Avensis' themselves have a few troubles, but Toyota auto's are amongst the best and most reliable boxes around, by the sounds of it, Toyota auto's are certainly stronger than the manual boxes at the moment.

What other problems do they have?

By the sounds of it just a few general build quality issues, the VVT-i engines seem to be quite troublesome with burning excessive oil on the facelift old shape Avensis, which are the same engines as in the new Avensis so might also suffer from it in the future, a few minor electrical glitches.

Personally, I would try and find a Camry, the ones that were sold in the UK were made in Japan are assembled to a higher standard, they are not expensive second hand due to massive initial depreciation, there the next best thing to a Lexus but a lot cheaper.

Overall initial quality seems to have improved over the old shape Avensis, but from a few faults that have appeared that people have reported on here I think they might start to show up with more faults in the future.
