So that means that you can't read English - all the signs are bilingual - by law.

And by the way that's Wales not wales mate

Heard about that on the news this morning. I'm half Welsh and spend a lot of time there. Better ask Brussels what they've done with my static caravan near Bala!

I liked this quote... "We work hard to put Wales on the map so this kind of thing is not what we want to happen."

Well... yeah!

Oh, and most road signs are bilingual.

Nothing to do with the thread, really, but we went into a Restaurant for lunch during the summer. It was in the Conwy valley.

The Lady of the House asked us, rather sniffily, if we wanted to eat. We did, & as we ordered I remarked that the Welsh word for Restaurant which I had seen on the way in, was very similar to the Irish. She asked which part of Ireland we were from , & when I said "Balbriggan. north of Dublin", I saw the smile starting. You know it? sez I. Turns out she lived nearby for years. Next her husband/chef, having heard , came out to chat, & wanted to know if Frank Carson was still mayor of the town. He isn't, but still lives there.

So, after a cool reception we were quids in.

My experience of travelling through Wales via Snowdonia to Holyhead with a sidetrack to Caernarvon [spelling?] was that everything was bilingual

Caernarvon is fine but it's Caernarfon in Welsh. Pronounced the same though!

Surely when some of you have been travelling in Wales, you've seen 'Araf' (meaning 'Slow') on the approaches to some corners?

Just popped into Wales this evening. It's still there.

Yep I can confirm I can still see Weston - Super - Mare from the office so we haven't floated off anywhere.

When did they put a statue of liberty up at Weston though? Never noticed that before!!

I had to spend most of yesterday in !Removed! cearphilly.

I'm not a huge fan of the place and I find a lot of the natives seem really cold when they clock that we are english.

I took great pleasure in telling my old boss the news though

You will never get a warm welcome in Caerphilly mate. I am from Cardiff and used to go there for work from time to time and found it quite frosty.

No offence intended to anyone from there it is just my experience.

I will give them that. Although I prefer Halloumi (Greek cheese) being half Greek Cypriot was brought up on the stuff. Lovely fried or grilled with breakfast.

Sorry way off topic.

Not to worry[being off topic!) Went into Greek restaurant & Waiter tried to discourage me from trying Retsina- Loved it.

Must try your cheese, but i bet it is hard to come by.Haven't seen it in any of the better Delicatessens. Must keep eye open for it

Going off topic is like having a conversation- you move on :P

You can buy Halloumi cheese in most branches of Tesco's now mate.

It is goat milk cheese and will not melt if you fry it in some olive oil.

If you try it fry it in a hot pan with a small amount of Olive oil until it starts turning golden brown! Yum

Retsina!! Had some bad memories of that stuff, Ouzo and Zivinea(80%)

Every been to Llandudno? All the locals chatting away normally ..... Soon as they hear an English Accent, suddenly all they can do is speak Welsh

(I'm allowed to moan about the Welsh, being partly one :naughty::laughing: )

At the moment our local county council is up in arms about having to make all the signs bilingual with the Welsh at the top. Pembrokeshire is known as 'Little England Beyond Wales' for obvious reasons... we don't speak the language and the majority of families originate from the West country. They reckon it's going to cost a fortune to change all the signs. It seems that the Welsh words tend to be three times as long! For example, Tenby (where I'm from) is Dinbych Y Pysgod which roughly translates as Little Town/Fort of the Fishes  .

121833269_fb2284cf11.jpgYou work that out!!

Never had a problem with the Welsh people anywhere (and I don't speak Welsh or have a Welsh accent). I studied at Bangor Uni and found it a great place to be for three years
