17" Alloys

Hey guys!

Just put my 17" alloys on the car after its been lowered and it rubs like buggery. I ordered the alloys from Halfords who assured me I would get the correct offset, but surely they wouldnt rub if the offset was 100% correct?

I am gonna have a go at rolling the arches 2morrow. Wish me luck, this could be a major ballsup. Any advice on this is appreciated. Should I cut and trim slightly or have a go at a full on roll?!

:-S

I had the same problems with 16's with 38mm offset and that was with standard suspension. I was assured that the wheels were right for my Rolla too - same lie different company :crybaby:

Eventually had to sell the wheels (for about half what they cost - and were only about 3 months old) as they were so bad. Had to get 42mm offset and still had to have the arches modified - all documented on my website

Im begining to seriously think Halfords suck big style! They are a major company and cant get a simple offset right.

Not laughing at your problems dude - laughing at your response to Halfrauds

No offence, but come on, I can't believe you ever trusted Halfrauds for anything more than airfreshner

Not only do the little inexperienced spotty pikey's that work there know next to nothing, they are seriously over priced. Saying that - I have shares in the place due to the amount I have spent with them over the years :bye:

Seriously now, take it back to them and ask for a full refund. Go to a propper wheel place like Wheelworks.co.uk to get you wheel's done - comes with free advice too

I think the problem may lie with the fact that the wheel manufacturors don't know the correct offset for the car. The wheels that came supplied straight from the Toyota factory have 42mm stamped on the back of them. When I said this to the people who supplied my first set of alloys they said "No it should be 38mm - says so in the book" they also checked with their supplier who said the same thing. The other factor may be that our cars have drum brakes on the back - the later SR's had discs and (if I'm right) those cars don't seem to have this problem.

Totally agree with you SYSTEM G.

Also with reference to COROLLAGS's wheels I do wonder what 'cheap/ doggy' tyres they included with the wheels. A lady friend of mine purchased some wheels from a local branch (with 'Ripspeed cenrtre' ...I can remember when Ripspeed was a tuning/accessory centre based in north London) for her car and she had to wait 2months! Needless to say when they did arrive (after much pestering) the make of tyre was of some firm i'd never heard of.

What my friends and I have found with our local 'allfrauds' (which is a massive centre) is when they have a special offer/discount weekend on and you see something in there and then you want... buy it. However when it comes to ordering or advice keep well away. I also realise not all their special offers are 'special', just brought down to everyone else's 'normal' price.

Hey Guys!

I bought the alloys as they had a 20% off offer on and I got an extra 10% off from being a gold member so they only cost £590 - the cheapest quote I had.

The tyres on the alloys are Khumo 172's so they are a pretty reputable budget company. The wheels are scraping by around 5mm. The lip of my arch is about 20mm wide so Im gonna try rolling about 8mm of it over on itself by slowly bending the lip up with my fathers numatic (cant spell this) jaws and a hot air gun. May have to make afew cuts in the lip also. Hopefully I will be able to do a good job of this!

My father thinks I should take the wheels back to Halfords and tell them its the wrong offset but I cant see them doing anything about that accept blaming their supplier.

Yeah, my SR has the discs on the back. Although I havent lowered the car yet, my 17's dont rub at all. The car sits like a bus at the moment though!! The alloys are 42mm offset.

dont use a pneumatic jam to do this,

take a screwdriver and clean out the lip area on the inside so there is no debris in the way

heat a relatively small area of lip up with a hair dryer till its hot/very warm to the touch then take a rubber mallet and tap about 2" worth of lip up by about 3mm max, work your way along the edge repeating the process, heat & hit but dont get heavy handed and try to fold it right up in one go.

when you have been along the lip once go back to the starrt and do it again by about the same amount.

If you take your time this is a very effective way of doing it, whne you have been over the arch twice you'll be ready to hit the lip toward the outside of the arch instead of 'up', use a dolly or flat peice of wood pressed hard against the outside of the arch edge to support it whilst you hit the lip home and flat.

When you've finished take some underseal and paint it along the lip edge where it meets the arch inside to seal it off.

Hi i got some 17s two weeks ago there 40mm ofset and 40 series tyres i had no problems with rubbing until it was lowered 40mm on gmax springs last week and the only probs i had was very slight rubbing on the front (mainly just tyres rubbing on the liner) only when going way to quick on a rough road. i had the front arches rolled by topgear for £20 each they did a top job and now i have no probs even with two fat knackers in the back and a boot full of luggage! will post some photos when my digi cameras fixed

G6AArgh - did top gear seal the arches as Unity Jon mentioned? Cos I'm considering using their branch in West Brom and want it done right.

I have the same problem at the rear on standard height suspension.

corollags- you mention in another thread your paint cracked when rolling the arches, did you attempt to do it yourself or did someone else do it?

I need to know cos I was considering taking Unity's advice until I remembered your other thread.

Hey Rich!

I did my own arches. Wouldnt have anyone else to do them I dont think. At least if U do them yourself U know how youuve sealed them and exactly whats going on under there. The paint right on the lip of the arch cracked where it had bent 180 degrees, but this is sorted with some touch up paint and Waxoyl.

The best part, NO MORE RUBBING!!!!! :D

wouldjust like to say NOT all Ripspeed specialist`s are as crap as you guys make out!!! Lets just put it this way I have worked for the company for six months now as there alloy wheel specialist and I HAVE NEVER HAD A SET OF WHEELS BACK!!!!!! So please give credit where credit is due?

By the way the correct o/s for a 17 inch after market wheel with a 205/40/17 tyre is 40mm all tho you can get away with a 38mm if you use 195/40/17 tyre which is really the correct tyre size for the corolla anyway and thats with or without lowered suspension,Ive just fitted the new ripspeed multi spoke 17`s with Gmax 40mm drop! no rubbing as yet and the arch`s are standard!

So if anyone has anymore problems with wheel fittment then drop me a pm

and i will help you out!

nothing wrong with Halfords, I work for them myself on the ripspeed section, and as saxo killer said i have never had a set of wheels back! its nothing to do with Halfords, Halfords do not make the wheels or supply them, we have companies sendin them 2 us, for example:

Team dynamics are supplied by rimstock

OZ are motorsport wheels as so are fox,

all we do is send them the order sheet with the car and what wheels the customer wants, nothing to do with us ourselves. And Mr Corollags i supplied ur wheels and gave u a £200 discount, so shh :P. At least were better than motorworld,

If the wheels are supplied with the wrong offset, fair enough, but dont !Removed! about us behind our back, come and see us and we will sort something out

Not being funny or anything ad. The wheels that they supplied you with a 38 offset are the ones that are reccomended for the car. They have a wheel fitment guide and they list a toyota corolla as a 4x100 PCD and a 38 offset. If you go onto www.rimstock.co.uk, then click wheel fitment guide, search for your car and have a look. I know a 40 offset would probably remedy it, but team dynamics state it as a 38 offset. And if they state it as that, thats what they will supply mate, Sorry about that, I can give you their number if you want just to talk to them

Hi sorry it took so long to reply (been on hols) yes topgear did seal my arches when they were being rolled. and in response to msc kev its all very good if you have the time and the knowledge to do these type of things but i dont ( i work 60-70hrs a week and cant be ********d to do anything when im out of work) and on balance i would rather pay someone 40 quid to do my arches than spend a afternoon buggering about doing it (badly) myself, i know my limits and taking a hammer to what is no doubt a very expensive panel is not within them. but fair play to the guys that do!

:crybaby: Exactly the problem that I has with 16s. The original alloys on my SR hadan offset of 42mm but the company I tried to buy new alloys from insisted that the offset should be 38mm. The new alloys scrubbed but they wouldn't take them back and no refund because they said they were the right offset for the car :crybaby: Ended up haveing to sell them for less than half what I paid for them. :crybaby:

Hi guys,

Just a quick reply just to say again that a 38 o/s is right but only if 195/40/ tyres are fitted!!!!

How many folk fit 195/40 tyres??

What about 205/40 tyres, what offset should be aiming for?

Link to comment

If fitting 17inch wheels on a AE111 Corolla I think the tyre size has to be 205/45x17 (and these can be expensive) if speedo calculation is to remain the same.

I have 205/40/17 tyres on my G6R and i dont get any scrubbage at all apart from occasionally when i have 3 people in the back on a really poor road surface
