Toyota has been eyeing Nissan's success with the revived 350Z - and apparently, from spy pictures nabbed this week, it's been a little jealous of supercars like the Porsche Carrera GT, too. Toyota 's been caught testing what some insiders are calling the "TXS," a limited-production exotic that might be powered by a V-10 engine worth 500 hp.

Pictures show the TXS with enough cladding to disguise much of its shape, but clearly, this is no Celica or MR2-sized sportscar. Insiders suggest the car will tip in at less than 3000 pounds, giving its 500-hp powerplant (with 370 lb-ft of torque) a serious chance at catching the likes of the Porsche and Benz supercars. Top speed could reach 190 mph, the same league as the 550-hp Ford GT. Whether the drivetrain offers any version of Toyota 's hybrid technology is unknown.

Whether the final vehicle is sold as a Lexus or as a Toyota , it's likely that a limited production run of about 10,000 units is in order. Expect a debut at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show and an on-sale date soon after - with a price tag well over $100,000.

Looks like it may be a nice car under there, kinda like an NSX at the front.

Lets hope they lose the tea tray from the back before the final version !

i cant remember the name of it but i read about it somewhere, i seem to remember something about them not launching it until they start winning f1 races.

Yeah that makes good commercial sense, we'll spend millions of pounds developing a car but only release it if we start winning some F1 races !

:D

Its not the new supra (view other threads), its called the Volca (no not the volta, thats something else).

Toyota are dropping the MR2 and Celica. This is going to be the new flagship model.

I hear there is still going to be a new Supra (yeah right, dont hold your breath) but this isnt it :thumbsup:

Toyota aren't dropping the MR2 or Celica, it will just be discontinued in the US  .

Up to date their is no plans for a new Supra :( .

I have no definate news on the above car but my sources best guess is it is TTE's project car for next year's show's which i've heard is a Celica Turbo, this year's was the Roadster and the year before was the IS430 so make's sense really.

you mean the back end thats covered up with something?, and the front end thats got another bit stuck on it? Its easy to stick bits onto a car...

Look at the roof shape .... the only thing that hasnt been covered up is the roof.. and its exactly the same shape as a mkiv. The front and rear end both look different...becuase oh joy somethings been stuck on them. :D

look familiar???

idrc1466.jpg

for chuffs sake look you can even see the shape of the mkiv lights under the cover :D call yourself mkiv owners :D

thats clearly a mkiv covered in several rolls of gaffa tape.. another red herring methinks.

Sideview.sized.jpg

So apart from the lack of bodywork forward of the front axle, and behind the rear axle, the three exhaust pipes, wider rear flanks, corner mounted lights, single windscreen wiper its a MKIV ! ! ! !

Or were you thinking of some other MKIV model of car ? :P

like i said though, its not a standard mkiv is it.. its got bits done to it :D Its easy to add an exhaust, a wiper, and a front end and a bit of bodykit.

That's DEFINITELY a MKIV! :D Look at the shape of the roof, the shape of the side window (ignore the fact they've gaffer taped the quarterlight) and look for the shape of the top of the MKIV rear window amongst the gaffer tape.

As for a lack of body work front of the front axle, sorry, I don't see it, looks stock to me.

Obviously the car's been covered in cardboard boxes :D but it's DEFINITELY a MKIV.

Sorry guys, I think you're trying to dream up a MKV. :P :D

maybe you should have a look at the other new supra thread then compare them. Not that i'm wanting to get into an argument over it, I just think it looks more like these pictures in the other thread than any MK4 ive seen

$100,000... that's only about £55k right now with current exchange rates

but, any toyota that expensive would have to be marketed under the lexus brand imo

although the mkiv was a £50k car in its day wasn't it?

I thought the mk4 was going to be based on the current soarer (lexus SC430)

in the past, since the supra broke away from the celica, the mk3 supra is based on the mk2 soarer, the mk4 supra is a short wheelbase mk3 soarer.....

makes sense doesn't it?

I'd not be suprised if the mk5 was a but like a beefed up SC430, with a fixed roof to save weight........
