Vvti Oil Consumption - Again!

Hi.

Looks like another case of excessive oil consumption on my recently acquired 2000 X Avensis 1.8VVTI. It seems to be using around a litre per 1000 Miles. The car is now out of warranty, so does anyone know how much I should expect to pay to get this put right? If I leave it is it likely to get worse? Will I be doing any damage as long as I keep the oil topped up? If the problem is as has been suggested on other posts due to cylinder liner wear, will the fact that oil is leaking between the cylinder liners and pistons limit any further wear, and would the fault be detectable with a compression test?

Any advice greatly appreciated. I fear this one will be costly....

I think Toyota are paying for this when pushed, especially if the oil consumption is in excess of what it says in the manual which is 1 litre every 1000 miles I think.

There are a lot of cases of this happening on the VVT-i engines.
