Sat Nav Repair

I have a 2002 Avensis estate that I bought a few weeks ago second-hand. The dealer didn't advertise the Sat Nav and had removed it while the car was on display. So I was pleasantly suprised when the Sat Nav was fitted when I went to collect the car. Trouble is it doesn't seem to be recognised by the in-dash display/controls and I don't have a claim on the dealer as he didn't claim it was there at all. I can live without it, I've never had on before, but I'd like to get it working.

Any ideas what might be wrong? Alternatively, has anyone had experience of trying to get a unit fixed by Toyota or has anyone any idea as to who else I might approach to get the thing working?

a number of points but i have the new avensis so dont know if all these are applicable

firstly i would check legally whether the info you have about him not being liable is correct. you bought the car from him and parts of it dont work. ???

i would like to know how he removed it. was there a whole in the dash?

was this a main dealer because i would be uneasy that just anyone could pop these out without knowing what the were doing.

isnt your car still covered under warranty. just take it to your main dealer or another main dealer and say it has stopped working.

lastly are you sure it has sat nav. what kind of display is it because on the new version most models have the small orange and black display that has the buttons for the sat nav but they dont work. only the trip computer functions work.

hope this might generate some thoughts

<<you bought the car from him and parts of it dont work>>

True, but he didn't advertise it as having sat nav, it wasn't there when I test-drove it, and I was suprised it was there when I went to collect. This is a very large used-car company in London, they sell huge numbers of cars cheaply with low margins. They were giving nothing away even when I bought the car so I'd be banging my head against a brick wall fighting with them now I have parted with my cash.

The TNS200 is integrated with radio/cd etc. The dash controls were fine, I suspect they look the same whether the car has a sat nav or not. The sat nav unit is in the boot area and can be detached easily after unplugging a few cables.

<<isnt your car still covered under warranty. just take it to your main dealer or another main dealer and say it has stopped working.>>

I don't have any warranty information. The car was first registered new on 1/2/2002. I supposed that the sat nav would only be covered for a year. Am I wrong?

<<lastly are you sure it has sat nav. what kind of display is it because on the new version most models have the small orange and black display that has the buttons for the sat nav but they dont work. only the trip computer functions work.>>

It does have the sat nav and traffic avoidance units in the boot, they were handed to me and I had to connect them myself. Each connector is a different shape so I think I must have connected it correctly.

its worth going to a main dealer. in my experience they carnt do enough for you. ask them if you have installed it right and if you have is it covered under warranty.

wont hurt

Firstly I presume that you have checked that there is a map data disk loaded in the sat nav disk drive in the boot (if that is where it is located in the 2002 model, it is in my 2001 model).

Secondly what happens when you try to switch it on ?

Finally I could be wrong but I thought that all Avensis models from GL upwards after 2001 came with sat nav as standard, in which case it should still be covered under the Toyota warranty.
