The car in the pics above look like a kitted MKIII.

The current MR2 concept floating about (we saw it at JAE) is this one:

dunno about that as it dont have the same bonnet... with the F1 style nose.. nor is it raised along the middle... the lights seem different as well..

if it is that concept.. they have changed it loads!

the top one is almost nice, it's very nearly there... too angular... poorly designed kit, I do like the idea of widening it out a little though, makes it more agressive.

The 'concept' car....

that is possibly the WORST looking car i've ever had to look at.

the car in the main pics has been heavily disguised (sp?)

So i doubt it would actually look anything like that if it was a production car

Still think MK2 mr2's are the best looking :D

Yup... agreed again. MKII is still the best in the looks department B)

I haven't really taken to the MKIII at all. The concept I posted is a little too far "out there" for my liking. But it is just the concept. They will use that as a starting base for something similar in the future...

The official tubby version of the MKIII should be released soon, but at shortly before JAE they were still having problems with reliability of the engine - It might have been sorted by now (who knows???). There was a prototype of the oficial MKIII Tubby at JAE too.

As far as I know the current chassis will not change to accomodate the tubby engine. I have seen a couple of MKIII tubby conversions but these cost a bomb to get done

I'd love a mk3, the only thing is that in standard form it looks pants.. A new set of wheels and bodykit would be a definate first within a couple of weeks of buying one. But, shelling out a fair amount to buy one, and then a couple of k more for wheels etc - no chance.

Test drive soon methinks ;)

mk3 MR2 + 1.8 VVTL-I engine, why did it never happen?

I find it hard to believe that this engine was not mated with the mk3 from the very beginning, it's a perfect match.

In fact it would be very similar to the new lotus elise that uses that engine.

Are toyota purposefully trying to make all their new cars boring?

mk3 was some time in 2000 i believe? (in japan anyway)

and as far as i'm aware the vvtli was introduced into the corolla in 2002

but asides from that i don't know when the engine was first available

That seems about right. I'm just thinking that if the VVTL-I was developed before the mk3 was introduced, then no doubt they would of equiped it with this..

The mk3 needs something more than your average 1.8.

And I've got to agree with Toyota making their cars boring. Sort it out Mr T

1.8 VVTL-i was first available in the UK in the Celica 190 in late 2000 or early 2001.

The same engine was available from launch of the Celica in 1999 in Japan and the US though (although with only 180bhp rather than 189bhp).
