Hi everyone, im not sure where to begin, i have so many hair brained ideas.

currently browsing fensport and noticing the different types of turbos, etc etc.

im thinking ( just thinking )

whats involved in making my NA a turbo. i know or think im probably as well just buying the gt4, but i like my celica.

if its not too much work or too expensive i might do it.

i know the whole head needs changed,

where would one begin?

anyone know anysites that have done it etc etc etc

thank you

personally i'd say it would be cheaper to buy a gt4 not only for all the effort but also the running costs after insurance being the main one, remember you said your insurance would stretch your preverbial if you were to super charge it, imagine telling them you had turbo'd it, with a head changed etc. new ubik please!

Its not the head you need to change really its the pistons. As you probably know turbo's have a lower compression ratio than the non turbo. There are several ways of achieving this and Toyota did it by fitting different pistons. You would also need to create the oil feed for the turbo which isn't on the non turbo block. The simplest way of converting the Celica is to buy the turbo engine, ECU, gearbox (with limited slip differential) and the drive shafts from an MR2 turbo.

It wont be cheap, you will probably need to budget around £2000 and that wouldn't include any labour costs, then as already stated there is the question of increased insurance.

cheers lads, decided over the weekend, im just going to put a few rupee's aside every week and hopefully buy the gt4 after xmas.

insurance isnt really a major concern here.

the way im looking at doin it is finding a written off gt4 pulling engine and drivetrain out and fitting into my gt except modify drive train to power the correct wheels it sgonna cost bout 3.5 k but an engine conversion costs cout 2.7k so i think its worth doin

Fair do's mate, if thats what you want go for it.

I've considered it myself, as I really like my car- and rather than buy another although it would be cheaper, a GT2 (as I like to call them) would be individual and different.

hmm, as far as im aware you cant just swap over the head, the block isnt the same - it has a few additions for the GT4.

just buy a gt4 mate.

you know it makes sense

it makes sense, toyota made them straight off the line with full time 4 wheel drive and if you find a decent one without bogging probs etc, job done basically.

everyone i have chatted to who have done the swap say it's a nightmare.

USA celica.net members can't get the alltrac as it was only sold in canada, so lots of those guys do a swap - have a look in the forced induction forum at http://celica.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?u...&f=37&submit=Go and read the nightmares.

you can find a decent 185 for around £3K for a good one, as low as £1,500 for a iffy one. mine cost £1,500 as it had a misfire - wasnt a misfire at all it was a manifold gasket which i replaced myself, one of the magnacor spark leads was burnt out which had caused the sparks to burn too with overfueling, so it costs me around £150 to put right with stock leads, new EON plugs, new manifold gasket, oil change, filter change, wheel bearing and radiator flush.

now she's hitting 1 bar, i did 14.127 seconds qtr mile at the GT4 annual event, now compute that if i strip out the leather seats, door cards, carpets, air con, cruise con, spare wheel, leccy windo motors etc etc etc, i would defo make 12's, and thats without hybrid turbo - front mounted intercooler, big induction kit , oil catch can etc etc etc. the top 10 fastest celica's in the world are 12 second qtr mile cars, the top being a gen 5 gt4 in the 10 second class followed by andy ashby from fensport at no' 2 with his faff with top mounted intercooler. I'm seriouslyconsidering stripping her out one week towards the end of next summer when its cooler, so the heat dont bog her down, just for 1 days dragging - if i can get into the 12's it should add interest and value to the car if i sell it, just to get on that list ran by Chris Dittrick of Alltrack.net - them i would carefully refit everything and have a big grin thereafter.

you defo wouldnt get that with a swapped in 3sgte in a GT.

go on mate do it.

:D
