Sticky Right Caliper

Guys,

Could you help me out? I have a corolla 1982 and my problem is that my right front break always sticks. I have checked the caliper, the funny thing is after I apply a pressure to the break pedal, it takes 30 seconds before the caliper goes to its original position (return). I can bleed the right caliper even when there is no one pushing the break pedal.

Any Ideas Please?

reym,

It could be that a piston in your caliper accumulated dirt between itself and the caliper, therefore the fluid is pushing it outwards and it's not going back in!

In such case what you need is a break cleaning spray, one of those clips that you apply on the hose so that no fluid comes out of the pipe when you remove the caliper,g-clamp and patience. I also found my compressor to be very handy. I did the same thing on my motorcycle.

Once you remove the caliper, check the piston if it has excessive dirt on it's sides. Remove this by using the cleaning spray and remove it instantly with a brush. The spray is highly volatile so do this quickly. Apply as much spray as you wont, it won't damage anything. Then, work out the caliper. I used a compressor to push air in the caliper, trough the break fluid inlet. Then push it back in with a g-clamp. Try this repetedly.

If there is enough space in the caliper, the piston may come out of the chamber. This would be best to have it cleaned properly. The issue is how to get it back in, since there would be washers to seal the fluid from getting out. What i would suggest is to heat the caliper, like leaving it in direct sunlight, and place the piston in a freezer so the chamber expands and the piston shrinks. It should be easier to get it back in the chamber.

I hope you find this handy.

My Heros,

I have formulated a plan from your advises:

1. Replace the Rubber Hoses.

2. Check and clean up the caliper

I'll try it this coming weekend. You'll be hearing from me this coming monday.

Thanks a whole lot guys.

  • 2 weeks later...

Guys, Thanks a lot! I have found the source of the problem: The idiotic mechanic used a wire to place the flexible hose into position, the wire worked as a check valve delaying the return of pressure and fracturing the fexi hose.

After replacing the hose, the car ran smootly without any dragging breaks!!!

Thanks a lot!!!!
