Engine Failure

:crybaby:

My avensis engine (1.8) has failed after 55k miles and 3.5 years. On talking to a friend in the trade he says he's had 40 calls over the last few months with people with the same problem.

Are Toyota aware of the problem whichappears to be excessive oil burning related and what have other folk done.

I think this is appalling I would never buy another Toyota.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks

yes i can see where this is headed mate. right here

I have a 1996 1.8 ST Celica which is great to drive, performs really well and is all round great fun!

But.... It seems to drink a fair bit of oil, I seem to be putting about a gallon in every 3 thousand miles.

guess he was lucky to get over 100,000 miles from that.

The 7A-FE is a pre VVT-i engines which seem to be a bit more sturdy, although the best was the 3S-FE and 4A-FE.

I think the 1ZZ-FE is the 1.8 VVT-i which seems to be the weakest of the lot.

 The engine (1.6) in my Avensis has also failed in the last couple of days. It was also at 55,000 miles but is 4 years old so is out of warranty. They tell me it will cost me 2000 euros to fix. They are going to put in a second hand engine. I told them to go ahead but I am regreting that now as I found a comment on the bbc topgear website about a manufacting fault in the 2000 Avensis, which they are staying very quite about I might add. Address of comment: http://www.topgear.com/content/my_topgear/duffers/E6/C5/02/

I only had the clutch replaced two weeks ago - so much for a reliable car. I would be interested to see hear how you get on with yours.

The garage told me this evening the con rod snapped - surely this is unusual for such a low mileage.

Hi

I just bought an Avensis VVT-i GLS 1.8L 2001 with 58K on the clock, it had full service history and i did notice that it had an Engine change at 40k , costing £1,923.40 then at 51K it had Engine System/Camshaft/Valve Fit Removal & Replaced.......

It also had the Steering colum lubrication & Brakes Bleed/Flushed at 39K...

You might think " Why did you buy this car???" lol but i thought with all the "known" probs out the way what else could go wrong??

All the above done at BENFIELD TOYOTA.

So after reading the forum for a bit i thought i had all the probs described in it covered...........NOT WITH A TOYOTA..........

You can see my other posts :help:

My 2001 Avensis completely ran out of oil at 37,000 miles. The dealer has topped it up and advised that it is "perfectly normal" for the car to use a litre of oil for every 4 thousand miles. I pointed out that this must mean it will completely run out of oil in between routine service intervals. They acknowledged that this is indeed the case and seemed surprised that I thought this was unusual???

I feel robbed. I am going to have to sell the car as a result of this as I have lost all faith in the vehicle and the dealer.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for your comments and for pointing me at the Top Gear web site.

I have not got very far with Toyota - they say because our last service was not with them and we used a non toyota oil filter then we're on our own!

Good isn't it.

55k miles and goodbye.

If this were true there would be no Halfords etc and everyone would have to go to their original manufacturer for servicing forever. I thought this insistance was illegal under EEC rules.

this happened to me ona ford escort , not a ford oil filter and under warrenty , oil pump packed in and they said warrenty was void because of non ford filter , cost my dad then £ 600 for an engine rebuild , the toyota oil filter has a non return valve built into it which only allows the oil back into the sump as the engine cools, Halfords ones dont.

i feel for ya fella.
