Celica Gt4 St185 Boost Gauge Fitting

i've just bought a boost gauge for my GT4 and was wondering where the vacuum hose is located

I have the T-piece and fitting kit , but just need to know which hose to connect it to

It is somewhere on the manifold and was just wondering if someone knew exactly where.

Plus any ideas where I can get a live feed and a ground for it as it is backlit

and I will be fitting it onto the A-pillar ????

Cheers,

Jonathan

Hmmm. Not as straight forward as some people think this one.

I`ll try and explain step by step.

1/ There`s a pipe at the back of the inlet manifold about half an inch long that has a plastic blanking plug over it. You`ll have to have a bit of a grope to find it. I think its about 10mm in diameter. This is the best pipe to use for vacuum as the others tend NOT to give an exact reading due to them being used for such things as air con control etc. You`ll need to use a piece of 10mm rubber or silicon hose to connect to the pipe which goes to the gauge. I had to use a reducer pipe on mine. reduces 10mm to 6mm. (Not sure what size your pipe would be, but same principle applies) You`ll also need to put some silicon sealant around the joints to avoid leaks.

2/ The vacuum pipe then needs to be fed through to the cabin. Not an easy job. Feed it through where the wiring loom goes into the bulkhead. Which will come out behind the glovebox. (Very limited working space) Might be best to remove the glovebox. (Only two screws)

3/ Once you`ve decided where your going to put the gauge feed the pipe under the dash to your chosen location.

4/ Wiring the illumination in is fairly straightforward. Simply wire it into the dimmer switch for the instrument lights using scotchloks or solder it as i did. You`ll need either a voltmener or some other method of locating the appropriate wires.

Hope this helps. It`s always dificult to describe how to do a job as everyone tends to do things in a slightly different manner. But i`ve done it as above and the results are very satisfactory,

Good Luck :thumbsup::thumbsup:

thanks for you help,

your instructions were spot on

At 1st I fitted it to the square bo that connects to the inlet manifold on the passenger side of the engine, it olny ran at 0 to start instead of -1 and only boost to 0.5 bar !!!

So after some hunting I found the pipe on the back of the manifold , T-pieced it in and now it starts off at -1 and goes up to 1 !!!

Class, well happy now , been putting the job off for months , it only took about 1 hour !!!!

Cheers

  • 2 weeks later...

Is this the only hose that you should tap? Im just putting one into my 185 today and Im struggling to find this hose...

Its a JDM model, is it possible for someone to post a pic showing this hose... if this is the best one to use.

Also where have people mounted their boost and oil pressure gauges, I was thinking about on the steering column but I will lose some of the display... not to important parts, then I sat them on the dash in the centre angled towards me and that looked pretty good.... just not sure bout attachin them to the dash??!!

Cheers

If you have a grope along the rear of the intake manifold towards the bottom slightly toward the righthand side you should come across a stubby pipe about 20 mm long. It`ll have a plastic cap and a spring clip on it. This is probably the best pipe to use.

As for locating the gauge, Thats down to personal preference. But i initially had mine on the pillar and to be honest it looked pants. Then i got this one and it was too big to put anywhere except on the dash.
