Engine Conversions

Hi all...

Now I've got my Bodykit, install and alloys sorted I'm looking at getting some decent power to go with the projected look of car. Kind of shown up at santa pod this weekend running 17.88, but not bad considering my added weight and larger wheels.

I have a few things I'm going to do to the 4AFE such as decat, manifold, cams, dastek which will see me ok for a while. 17's will also be coming off for 'very' lightweight 16's and the front will be dropped more to balance out the car. Suspension will be changed in due course and strut brace front and rear.

Engines for consideration are the:

4AGZE

4AGE 1600cc 20V

I've checked Fensport's website and I'm considering using them to do the work and got a general overview of what's what. I also thought about trying to attain some sort of sponsorship through them as the car is looking quite tidy now and going to all the shows I do through year, maybe a proposition for them.

Can you give me your opinion on the engines, performance and how they drive etc etc and what type of ££££'s I'm I looking at for each for the whole conversion. Also putting the above engines in the AE101, does either go in any easier then the other and costs involved when comparing the two. Is one more suited to the AE101 then the other.

Does each engine require custom engine mounts and driveshafts?

Is either of the engines considerably heavy then the 4AFE?

Any advice and pointers, much appreciated.

thanks

Kev

right where do I start :lol:

Frstly fensport dont do the conversion they use some bloke called kevin to do there conversions. John (ae111sr) used him to do his conversion so would be best to ask him about the quality of the work.

Also if you do get the 4agze engine get it from JBmotorsport and save youself some cash you will need it for the extra bits you need if you do the conversion

The 4agze is a good engine but to get loads of power out of it costs :censor: loads  I dont know much about the 4age20v but I know there are 20v turbo's again loads of £££.

Install price for me on the 4agze was 1500 quid so not bad the engine mounts for the 4agze are the all the same as the 4afe apart from 1 (good work toyota)

the wiring loom is a nightmare  but if you have a good garage they will get it done

Add a good airfilter, exhaust system and an bigger pulley you will end up with anywhere between 180-200bhp it seems to be diffrent from every 4agze :lol:

Also there is the smile factor everytime you hear the charger kicks in :D :D it gets fun at 1800rpm upto 6900rpm

what else.....

oh yeah suspension the 4agze is heavy and I mean really heavy  you will need to upgrade the suspension either use the stuff from the donor car you get from fensprort if you buy it from them or get jon to send you it also if you get it from him. The levin came with superstut suspension same stuff that is on the st205 gt4 just a bit smaller :D I use it on mine and it's fine.

You could also get koni's and go that route John (ae111sr) would again be best to talk to on that as he did that

Also you will have to think about the intercooler either front mount it or keep it top mounted like I did  but if you do keep it top mounted you will need a scoop

There are the brakes I used the ones of my doner car they are 275mm and stop the car with ease hehe you just find that you need pads a bit sooner then you think. I dont know if your model has rear disks mine did not so got some fitted from a ae101 20v levin also help to stop the car

also is you speedo cable or electric? if it's cable then you will need to change the sender unit on the 4agze

There are loads more things but my brain has just died after writing all that :lol:

excellent ta very much!

looks like a good 3-4k will be needed then and suspension upgrade which I was going to do anyway, air filter and exhuast system is sorted already. Brakes is another thing too.

Hopefully the timescale will be no more then a couple of months.

Looks like there will be a few complications along the way, but nothing I'm not prepared for.

Just got to sort out a mortgage on our new house next year, let the financies settle down and start the conversion.

I've taken a slightly different route from (Andy) Knowlson. with my 4a-gze conversion I've kept the original suspension struts but upgraded the front springs by 40%, the rears by 30% and put Koni adjustable shocks all round. Anything less with the 4a-gze in it and it's not nice to drive. I've still got my original brakes - including rear drums - in fact they are still the original pads and shoes - car is now 6 years old. I've gone for the front mount intercooler rather than the bonnet scoop. Bigger pulley and ABV mod is a must to get more than 8psi boost. I also have a Unichip but still only have 187bhp (flywheel). Like Andy said it takes a lot of cash to get much more out of it.

Take a look at my garage entry to see what else I've added and details can be found on my website. The guy who did my conversion is Kevin Clarkson in Droitwich on 01905 778368 - give him a bell and he'll tell you what his costs are - but I know he's on holiday until the end of the week. He will also be able to tell you about the 20valve engine - he fitted one to his own ae111 and then took it out and replaced it with the 2.0 turbo 3s-gte.

Kevin's work is top notch, nobody better with Toyota's IMHO! He does all the work to mine if I have problems with it. (That's where I saw your car, John  . When he was moving your intercooler  ).

His prices are cheap to say the least... compared with official Toyota. And he'll be able to sort anything out for ya

thanks for the help guys...

lots to ponder over and I won't be rushing in to it.

I'll keep you posted over the next few months on what's happening, first I'll see what power I can get out of my 4afe, can't really justify ripping it out just yet after only owning the car 10months, lol changed a fair bit come to think of it!!! The engine still only has 61k on it, I've put on about 10k in the 10 months of driving it I think.

Just wish house prices weren't soo darn expensive, then I could start it after christmas.

Didn't know you had seen it mate. He was doing that and a few other bits so I left it with him for a couple of days.

So,would £3000 be enough to cover the engine package from Jon Barnes and the labour cost from Kevin?Thats about all I have at the mo.May have another £1000 extra in another 2mths...

I was hoping to get it done for under 4k, and with what has been said already it appears to be in the budget

Yea, I know Kev too well <_<

Love the "Supercharged" on your rear bumper, lit my eyes up with the sparkle :drool::drool: . All round " " factor IMO! Would love to see Knowlson's too  , the pictures make it look soooo slick :D

Antd4agze, give him a ring saturday morn or sometime next week (not sure when he comes off holiday  )
