Recommended Posts

I have a new 2.0 Litre petrol Avensis and when the engine revs at 3,000 RPM and above there in a humming noise and vibration when the clutch pedal is pressed and released.

Has any other driver experienced the same?

Any information would be appreciated.

Probably not much help but I have a slight clutch howl on mine. Just at biting point for a moment. The dealer is having it back next week to have a look perhaps it's just the bearings need a grease.

I'll post the outcome.

Hi All,

Now the saga starts.

Toyota had a look at the car and agree there is a noise but say that I would have to agree to pay for the work for them to have a look at the clutch if they don't find something that is covered under warranty.

This car of mine has done nearly 38k now I told them there was a noise on the clutch 10 days after I brought it, I'd not covered 400 miles in it.

I have a 12 month warranty with the car.

Anyone had a similar experience or know anything more about this clutch noise that this model has or know of any links where I can find more information?

Any help would be gratefully appreiciated.

Thanks

Penny

Sounds like something that has appeared on my '99 GLS. As far as I know it is just a clutch bearing that has gone dry, since it only really happens when pulling away from a standstill. It will need to be done but at the moment, as it's not driving the missus barmy enough to get it done.

Clutches are generally excluded in warranties due to the 'wear and tear' issue associated with things like brakes and tyres. Boy Racer could burn a clutch out in seconds, Mr Careful could still be on the same clutch 5 years later. Similarly, young lady A could burn a clutch out faster than old lady B or vica versa. Not trying to aportion blame or anything here, just trying to illustrate the difficulties that dealerships have sometimes. In the interests of political correctness, young man 'A' could fry a clutch twice as fast as young man 'B'. :)

You told them you heard this 'noise' 10 days after you bought it. I presume that you are now experiencing the same problem further down the road - pardon the pun. What sort of mileage have you added since your initial observation, how long have you had the car and what are the symptoms?

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I've had the car 1 month now, I've done about 900 miles, about 550 since I first noticed it. The problem has remained the same since I first noticed it.

I've not managed to burn a clutch out yet in any car (been driving 21 years) so I don't believe my driving has effected it.

The noise is just a slight howl at the biting point, it does only last a moment. I asked my own garage their opinion, they kindly took it for a drive and suggested that it was probably caused by the plates rubbing, perhaps because it's done realitivly few miles over it's 5½ years they've glazed slighty. As they said don't worry about it the clutch feels fine and works well, I've told Toyota that I would leave it for now.

I'm having the rear washer motor replaced under warranty as that is faulty.

Regards

Penny

Ah, very low mileage then. The best thing you can do for your car is give it a run out (40+ miles) and give it a bit of a thrashing every now and again. The biggest engine-killer other than boy racer 0-60 in 8 seconds day in day out is a car that does low mileage at moderate speeds.

Mollycoddle it most of the time but once in a while put your turbo-nutter shoes on and hammer it. :) Okay, it feels harsh, like whipping the life out of a horse to win a race but a good thrash blasts some crap out of the system and keeps it mean.

Hello,

I agree with you, it's quite easy to Mollycoddle it especially with that ecno light. It's a temtation to try and keep it on all the time and see what the best MPG I can get.

An aside to that the MPG is 41-43 at the moment on mainly country roads, my last car a mondeo 1.6 estate didn't do more than 30 mpg (awful)

Thanks for your comments, always intresting to hear about other peoples experiences.

PJ, I have a similar problem in my 1.8. So far, just 32K miles and this vibration has appeared above about 3000 RPM. Don't notice anything at all at idle. I have no noise (well, not that i've noticed!). I was waiting for it to get a bit worse before bringing it back to the garage. If you get a result or even info, I'd love to hear it.

Joe.

Toyota GB have confirmed the presence of the noise/vibration having driven the car however, I am now in a dispute with them. Their Field Service Manager drove the car and produced a report and recommend that the Centre remove and inspect the clutch and if necessary replace any components which are not within specification. The inspection of the clutch should include all components including the flywheel for correct tolerances and measurements in accordance with the repair manual.

When the dealership challenged this and asked for clarification as to exactly what work should be undertaken, another report was submitted stating that they “back-to-back" tested the vehicle with several other identical models of similar age and mileage (mine is brand new and had a few hundred miles on the clock when this was reported) and can confirm that the vibration is present on all of the vehicles tested to a lesser or greater extent. Having carried out extensive testing of identical models and looking at all of the technical information available, I can confirm that this is a standard characteristic of the model.

So it appears that when it was realised that the problem affected all the vehicles tested, it suddenly became a characteristic of the model rather than a fault.

I challenged the report over a week ago my e-mail but they have not bothered to reply yet.

I hope this info is useful, I will keep you posted.
