In looking at vehicle ID plates on the firewall, the type transmission is listed (ie T50) along with the VIN number. Does anyone know whether the trans ratio is part of the VIN or is it stated elsewhere on the vehicle??

Thank you maleborn1967: The model is RA42L-BLMQSA and the frame no. is RA42-102093. I'm looking for a close ratio trans for our Bonneville Salt Flat car. Shifting into 4th at 9,500 rpm, motor drops to 6,300. Motor peaks at 8,000-8,500 and cannot recover at the end of the run, getting back to 7,000 (140 mph). Consequently may have several VIN's to look up by the time this is over. Just what reference are you checking?? Thanks for the time,

Kent

This is a box from a 1978-1980 Celica GT with a 20R engine, right?

If so, then as far as I know it should have a W50 box with the following ratios:

1= 3.287

2= 2.043

3= 1.394

4= 1.000

5= 0.853

R=-4.039

You do however mention a T50 box, I thought these only came with the T-series engined Celicas, and not available in the US. Anyway, gear ratios for the T50 are:

1= 3.587

2= 2.022

3= 1.384

4= 1.000

5= 0.861

R=-3.484

Cheers, Yves.
