18 years old, £1800 Insurance, and you want to make it look like a kit car? Your insurance will be ridiculous, and your car will be worth less than half what its worth now. Add to that the fact the statistically speaking, your pretty likely to smash the thing up anyway, and I think you'd be wasting your time and money.

As for 1400cc MR2's. check again...

I think your all being a bit harsh on a newbie.

If you had been like that to me when I joined last week I'd probably have left and never come back....it happened to me on a peugeot forum.

Give the lad a chance for heavens sake.

My personal thoughts on the Ferrari kit are that it looks quite good as kit cars go. There are a lot worse kits about.

As for the 1.4 bit, anyone can make a mistake but to get a mouthfull on his first post is a bit off in my book.

Michael,

If your paying that much on a 1.6 (we presume) you have no chance on a bodykit. However, don't go getting quotes for an MR2 with a body kit, get quotes from a kit car insurer as they specialise in this kind of thing.

I do think you may possibly need to be 21, maybe 25 before you can get kit car insurance though. Thats how it works with classic car insurance.

Hope your first post doesn't put you off posting again as these guys are actually nice folks.

Well, my first impression was that this is a wind up, based on the Ferrari body kit discussion the other week.

Michael, if you're genuine, welcome to the TOC.

Best bet is to buy a kit car mag .. I knew some, but a lot seem to be going down the pan at the min.

Anyhow, they'll have specialist insurance companies listed. Don't be supprised if you have to be 21+ or 25+ though.

£1,800 a year!! That's MIND BOGGLING!! I real feel for you guys, considering with ALL my mods noted on a Tyep III GT-S I pay like 205.00 GBP's a year. I'd be up for a Ferrari kit If I could find one (I only know of ONE in NZ which I bid like $3500 nzd's on & it sold for like $8000 nzd's). I'd assume all I'd be telling them as I have brought a Ferrari imitation body kit for my MR2 & what the kit is worth.....Im sure my insurance cost's wouldn't go up by much if at all.

Cheers

Yeah sorry its a 1.6

I just wanted to know if i should do this kit for a bit of fun.....but if the insurance ends up costing more than a Subaru Impreza i wont bother, thinking about getting one :D

Cheers!

it should be cheap insurance seeing that it will be an MR2 based 'Ferrari'

its classed as using another cars components but changing the identity or something like tha

All depends on how you manage to insure it....as a kit car, it should be quite reasonable, as a bodkit, you increasing the nickability risk, cost of repairs and many other factors.

Am I right in thinking Insurance isnt compulsory in New Zealand KiwiMR2?

Kiwi,

Who are you insured with? and I take it that your over 25? Im paying about the eqivilent of 100GPB a year for my ST185 and I can do what I like to it within reason as long as its all certed that needs certing. I thought that was kinda good for a 23 year old, only 3rd party tho.

I am still looking at a MR2 next year maybe but the Celica just got a new engine with some decompressed forged pistons so it will def be a engine switch if I do but they are still kinda expensive here for what they are and the age.

I got my eyes on a border kit, they go with the lines of the SW20 real well.

And no insurance isnt compulsory in NZ but for some idiots it dam well shoudl be!!

It's NOT compulsory but MOST if not ALL finance companys require full insurance on a car if it's financed.

I use a brooker & I turned 25 in June. Have the MR2, Glanza, & Contents insurance and after filtering throught the brooker it ends up being with State. I NEVER speak to State though...I tell the broker & he handles everything. You pay bugger all!! How did you manage that?? Im pretty stocked with mine though as I have a few mods that directly influence performance & you know what there like with that ;) Plus I have like $1800 worth of sounds etc.

Cheers

Hell yeah bring on my 25th!! Whats a 92 on MR2 GT/GTS going for, dont care if they have some high K's on it (Im keeping my $5000 engine thanks  ) in NZ, There are lots around on Trade me and the like but they are all up around $7k... you can get a tidy GT4 Grp A for that now!! Even the ST205's are plummeting in price, I saw one for $10k!!

And do all the targas leak badly cos I would love one but well if its goin to be a hassle.. I mean it is auckland so it rains at some stage of the day here

There are no hassles switchin engines are there? Both 3S-GTE's I mean I realise that the plumbin will be diff for the intake/intercooler but I can just mix and match I imagine.
