Removing Superstrut

Has anyone changed the superstrut front suspension from their Celica ST20X back to a standard Mac Pherson strut as used on the SS-I and the European GT?

My superstrut on my GT4 keeps wearing out and want to replace it with a standard layout as there are also more tuning options. :help:

Thanks Leeky, will the big GT4 brakes and brake lines fit the standard ST202 suspension.

If not then at least I know the suspension does fit.

Thanks for the suspension pics.

Any idea if the big brakes from the GT4 bolt onto the standard hubs without modifying anything?

My chassis number is ST205-0008979 and the chassis number for an SS-I that I found on the net is ST202-0023141.

Thanks for your help. Maybe we can get a solution for other superstrut sufferers out there too.

Bigger brakes will fit to normal suspension. but you should really stay superstrut anyway as its far superior on the celica and you will ruin the handling without it.

Seriously its worth the money keeping your superstrut.

It is a simple matter of cost and reliability whichever set up I use.

I do now know the standard (lower spec) suspension will fit. This will be more reliable but any loss in front grip can be made up through adjustment of anti-roll bars, shocks, springs.

The big advantage of the superstrut is that it is meant to keep the tyre contact patch flat on the tarmac compared to standard MacPherson strut but it is only a few percent.

The big deciding factor is the condition of Irish roads. I have driven coast to coast in America, all over Europe and we have the worst roads I have ever seen. They are not maintained with potholes everywhere, so that is the real problem. Wear and tear on the suspension. The superstrut only lasted 10,000 miles after everything being replaced and I don't drive like Colin McRae, 90% of the time it's driven easy and as a grand tourer over main roads. Only at weekends does it get driven to anything near it's potential.

I used to race Nascar in the States so I know a few things about set-up of a chassis.

Thanks for all the help and hopefully I can get the front suspension sorted once and for all.
