Common Problems Toc Heck When Buying A Yaris

Hi,

I am going to look at a 5 door Yaris with all electrics, T Reg. 60K miles.

What are common mechanical problems/ things to check with a yaris.

Any help would be apreciated. Thanks

What are the service intervals for a yaris?

Does it need a cam belt change or any other major work at the60k service?

I tend not to take much notice of what parkers say as they can be way off with some of the things they say. I did note to check for soft, easily dammaged paint.

Haven’t heard of any major problems with the Yaris, unlike the equivalent Clio’s Saxo’s Peugeot’s etc with the same mileage. The Yaris has a timing chain not a belt so no worries there!

I would just check the usual things like you would with any other second hand car.

Yaris Japanese, so it's bomb proof! Very few things go wrong, apart from a few squeaks in the cabin. And you've got the fact that it's finished in the top 10 of nearly every customer satisfaction survey (from J.D.Power to Top Gear) since it was released! It's a bit like Honda for reliability, nothing goes wrong! (Interesting fact... Honda have made 15 million VTEC units and not one has gone wrong!) So you're safe with a Japanese!!

Yeah nothing special to look out for just look at how clean the inside of the car is and that'll tell you how well its been looked after!

I reckon any Yaris which has been looked after should be good for 100k+ miles easily! :thumbsup:

like everyone has said before me no problems apart from squeeks

if it dont rattle it aint a toyota!!

i agree about the paint does chip VERY easy,if you see one with60k

and its chip free its prob been painted ;) :lol:

great car though i love mine :wub:

I took the plunge and bought the car.

It all seems fine and drives well. It does not even rattle at all.

The only thing I am a little concerned about is the length of time between services. The car was serviced at 600 miles, 5K, 25k and 45k. I would think it should be done more frequently than that.

I am going to change the oil and filter tomorrow.

Ryan1985, you say that they should be good for atheast 100K miles. I would be very dissapointed if any newish car needed a new engine after this distance. I would be hoping for between 170 - 200K miles before it is consigned to the scrap heap.

The service intervals are usually deemed by the year. It depends on the preference of the previous owners. They might have done plenty of miles, but only thought it needed servicing once a year. Ideally, Yari should be serviced every year or 10,000 miles... whichever comes first. So it says in the handbook!!

Just on the service and mileage thing, we had a old woman who bought a yaris off us in 1999 and has done 190,000, the fact that it has done that mileage is not surprising but when she booked the car in for its pre NCT/MOT and we checked the service record we seeing that we had never serviced the car, when we asked the woman she just said "it was going grand, I did not think it needed one". Not alone is it the highest mileage yaris I’ve seen yet but it has done that mileage and has never being serviced, just goes to show how good a car it really is.

Aye service intervals are every year or 10,000 miles whichever comes 1st! :thumbsup:

I changed the oil and filter in it yesterday. Oil was very black and smelly - been ther a long time.

I think the owner did not like paying so much for servicing, so only did the major ones.

In new Zealand, most cars are used Japanese imports. Japanese are known for never servicing cars because they only keep them a few years from new. Most go on for hundreds of thousands of miles after not being serviced at all in the first 40 - 60K miles.

The engine sounds fine so I think it will be fine.

When I sell the car in 5 years or so, it will have devalued so much that the original service history will not matter anyway.
