5th Gear For 1980s Corrolla 4wd

Hi, I am having problems with staying in 5th gear. The car keeps popping out of 5th gear unless I actually hold the gear change in place.

Has anyone had this problem? Is there anything we can do or is it time to replace the gearbox? Thanks (mileage 250,000kms)

I have heard about this problem with AE 92 GTi's from the 1987 - 1992 era on previous threads, plus I have a buyers guide from 1995 stating this can be a problem with high milers.

In the buyers guide (for GTi variants) it states that the gearbox does not need replacement, only the 5th gear assembly needs replacement, most Transmission specialsists are aware of this problem.

However if you have a spare gearbox to do a straight swop then I realise it may be cheaper than having your old box repaired.

I had my old box repaired when it kept on popping out of 4th gear. Cost me a small fortune. Check out http://www.fensport.co.uk/ they may have one for you and it'll work out cheaper than repairing the old one.
