Recon its the belt dude, as it just happened all of a sudden, the big end has tell tale signs for about 200-300 miles before hand.

Did you stop staright away?? MR2's are supposed to have a non-interferance engine so should kill the engine totally!

Cheers

Well it didn't sound too healthy .. but as you say, it's "just" happened.

The cams should have markers on them, know anyone with a timing gun?

I know very little about the FE engine though fella ..

I've come across this before - the belt slipped 8 teeth, we reset it and it ran fine - just hope yours is the same bud.....

Matt.

If it's just the belt slipped, you'll be fine. Get yourself a new one and get it fitted and retimed. As it's already been said, your engine is a non-interferance, so if the belt slips (or, indeed snaps), no damage to the valves is done.

Don't panic dude

How much does something like this cost dude?

Shouldn't cost that much. It's just a matter of whipping ther cam cover off, and retiming the cams. Not a huge job.

I thought all Mk2 MR2s came with the 3SGE or 3SGTE engine? I've just finnished changing the belt on a 3SGE Celica (1988), the belt had snapped under load and the engine's fine. It's an awkward job but not difficult. I think my Celica Haynes manual has details on the 3SFE, I'll have a look tonight.

The mk2 had an economy version which had the 3S-FE engine in it, nice powerful 121bhp!lol

If you find anything on the FE then that would be great :D

The thing is, the 3S-GE and 3S-GTE are non-interface, not the 3S-FE...

Contrary to popular belief the 3SGE and 3SGTE engines are NOT (I repeat ARE NOT) non-interferance/interface. I thought this until I was speaking to my ex-MrT mechanic about it.

If the belt has just slipped you should be able to sort it fine (Like matt said). But if it snaps under load, expect the worst, although you might be lucky.

Don't take chances with cam-belts. Always get them replaced on time

erm, so are they or arn't they .. you kinda say they ain't both

LOL.

Both the 3SGE & 3SGTE engines are not non-interferance.

I thought they were non-interferance until I was put right by my mechanic whilst he was doing the belts on Nicola's Rev2 N/A & Frosty's Rev3 Tubby.

Everyone I've ever spoken to has said that the 3SGE and 4AGE are non-interference.

When I got the cam covers off my 3SGE Celica I set the pistons, in turn, to the top positions and rotated each cam several times (gently) to assure myself that it was non-interference and to check that all the valves moved freely. It now runs perfectly!

I'd agree, get them changed as per spec but there’s no need for major surgery if they break!

I asked this question a while back. I googled it and came up with lots of contradictory information.

If Limey did what he said, then it sounds like it is a non interference engine. I think that the inlet and exhaust valves clear each other, if they ever end up open together.

bad news to hear fella :(

Did you not change the belt at the last service?

Anyway I hope it's easily sorted and no harm has come to the engine. :)

I only bought the car about 5-6 months ago at which point the owner assured me the belt had been changed (I trusted him as he was a friend).

I'm gona have a look at it ASAP.

I can't get insured on Lord Ed's car as its not in my name, so the insurance are being dicks about it, so i have found this nice little ford fiesta ghia 1.1 on the trader! (such a big step down :( )

I took a few steps forward with buying my mr2, now its time for the "one" step back, come february/march time i will be leaping forward again with a tuned tubby.

I will be selling all the parts from my MR2 apart from the TOM's scoops and HU, will it be ok to advertise them on here?

As everyone can see, it is for a genuine reason, and I am not like a regular trader or anything, just need some money from my car now to help buy my lil fiesta! (oh and pay Bibbs back of course! lol )
