Cam Belt

Im 99% sure the MR2 has a non-interference engine, I have seen on several motors when doing the timing belt turned the crank completely over without damaging the valves. People talk about the valves being bent because on high milage sometimes there is a lot of carbon build up on the valves and the pistons. In extreme cases this can cause the valves to contact the pistons when the timing belt breaks at speed.

Had a look in the Celica manual and it does cover cam belt changes on 3SFE engines. If you feel up to changing it and want me to photocopy and send the pages to you email me on limeymk1@hotmail.com.

Have you checked to see if the belt is broken or slipped? It's not difficult, just remove the top cambelt cover, it's held on by about 6 10mm bolts. To check for slippage/mis-alignment of the belt, rotate the crank shaft pulley using a ratchet (19mm socket) to TDC (top dead centre), there should be a mark on the pulley that once aligned with the 0 of a graduated scale on the lower cam cover indicates that the pistons are at TDC. At TDC the cambelt pulley should be in a certain position, there is a small dimple on the pulley just outside of the fixing bolt this should be at the 12 o'clock position when the engine's at TDC.

I'm writing this from memory, I read it last night but couldn't get online to reply so I can't guarantee the accuracy on the campulley markings.

Its kind of a blessing in disguise really, I needed a car thats better on fuel consumption as I drive for my business etc, and something that can carry my drums about...

Im stripping the car completely, selling the bits off it, and then my mate is taking it off my hands. When I can afford it, ill either be going the GT4 route, or an MR2 tubby, probably about february time, but its probably the best option for now! :)

Im still gona pester all of ya though :D
